Question about MSU's pass defense

MSU is 120th (out of 125) in pass defenses, giving up 300 yards/per game (which is hard to do). That was very suprising to me for a number 1 ranked undefeated team.
Digging a little deeper they are a much better but still not great 37th in pass efficiency defense, indicating that their pass defense isn't as atrocious as the raw passing stat would indicate.
MSU fans, tell me about your team's passing defense.
Is this just a matter of teams slinging it a bunch to play catch up or are teams doing work in the passing game early and against your first string as well?
Is there a bend but don't break philosophy to the pass defense?
Does MSU have anyone that can cover Amari Cooper (assuming the real Cooper shows up, and not the second half against LSU Cooper)?

Teams can't run on them, so they have to throw.
Also, MSU gets a big lead earlier - which forces teams to throw the ball down field more.
Stats can be misleading.

If you want to know, call Saban and ask him. He probably has a program for it that he'd be happy to share with you.
Bama will lose this game.

We're susceptible to the deep ball that I haven't seen much to indicate Sims being capable of throwing with any form of consistency...
We play very little man. Ton of zone. Ton of soft zones up big with a bunch of backup players. Our corner play outside of the UAB fiasco has been between good -- our free safety has been the issue at times. Not an athletic issue, but a mental issue. We've also got a lb that's salty in coverage when we bump him out...
We have separate safety and corner coaches -- and they seem to have alot more trouble getting on the same page at times than I'd like.

They are certainly better in rush defense at 22nd in the country and 126.7 yards per game. Not exactly impossible to run on, but definitely solid. I would imagine teams have adjusted playcalling and called more passes against them.

Figured this would be part of it. I think the better pass efficiency number indicates this is happening.

Agreed, that's why I wanted to have this discussion. I haven't really watched MSU play, was suprised by the raw pass defense stat, and wanted to learn more.

Analytics like State's pass defense much more than normal stats do.

Great post, thanks.
Interesting take on the corners being really good for MSU. I wonder why they don't play man more? I guess it's worked so far so why ask why?
Not sure if it is better to play zone or man against Bama. It would be interesting to look at the stats for that. The one thing that I think Kiffin has brought that has been a huge plus is the increased diversity of the routes receivers now run. He has been able to find the holes when teams have played zone. It might be the best way to contain Cooper though.

The thing about our stats is the fact that we're a hard-nosed, developmental program. We don't play for stats, even when it's a Heisman contender we're pulling early in the 3rd in a tremendous stat-padding opportunity. We play for the future almost as much as we play for the present. We're rotating alot deeper in many of these games(even when they are still in doubt early) in order to get experience to guys that aren't quite ready yet in alot of cases. Athletically strong guys that are lacking in experience/knowledge.
All that to say -- if you actually study our film -- our 1A D is virtually impossible to run on when we decide we want to stop it. We're playing 10-deep up front and 7 or 8 deep at LB in many of these games and rotating full units alot of the time. So, our "1A" D is probably on the field together less than 20 snaps a game in these gimme wins. They'll probably be out there together for 50 snaps of yours, with only the DL primarily rotating...

You'll teach me to try to say something nice about your HC.
Saban has a plan and Bama loses Saturday

I've noticed that on huge/meaningful drives, we go into some hybrid looks and really tends to confuse opponents. We've got a LB that can cover, a LB that can bump up and put his hand on the ground, a freak DT that can play every position across the DL, and a FS that's an athletic freak and has experience at corner(but his mental lapses kill us at times). Successful multi-positional guys on our first team d allow us a near infinite number of looks and disguises out of the same personnel packages. We don't do it constantly and kinda stay in base and save that for when we need it, but when we do it, we generally get immediate stops.
It's been perplexing at times -- but we rarely come out of our base d...

This is a pretty good assessment. We give up a lot of yards, but we also lead the nation in red zone defense, so there is a bend but don't break element.
Sure, we'd all like to see less yardage in the opponent passing column, but overall, our defense is a strength, not a liability.
If Alabama tries to cover Prescott like they did Jennings, its not going to matter how many yards you get.

Coop will wrap up the Heisman this weekend.

Do you even watch football. Coop lost his invitation with those three key drops against LSU. He won't even be a finalist when its said and done.

Wait til they sub Redmond out and then throw the deep ball.
