hire. He is coming from a coaching tree that has literally dominated college football for a decade.

Mullen would have been better. Equally as strong of a tree, with HC experience. Plus OC's tend to make better HC's. Glad you didn't want him though.

Just sort of boring with a fair amount of risk. I just don't really see Smart as the guy who will take UGA from complacency

If you think this is boring you obviously haven't suffered through the last few years of UGA football.

Not to mention Smart has only been half heartedly pursued for about 5-6 years now. I'm not dissing the hire, but calling it a home run is a stretch when he's been sitting there waiting on the right offer (which didn't come) for some time.

That's the point.

I would have thought they had more of a "sure thing" lined up.

This job is the only job in the country Kirby would have left Bama for.

I doubt that, but even if true how is it relevant?

We don't deal in safe "sure things" any more at UGA...CMR embodied that...it's time to take some risks...

He's had plenty of chances to leave previously and the only one he left for is Head Gig at Georgia.

In don't think it makes any sense at all. I like Georgia so I hope it works out but I see this working out like Muschamp at UF and maybe USCe

Yeah our offense is awful too but we didn't hire a DC now did we? At least...not yet.

Why?

I agree that his defenses will be comparable to Muschamp's at UF, but it would be hard to blunder the handling of offensive side of the ball as bad as 'Champ.

Smart has seen exactly how to be a defensive minded coach while also being able to maintain a very effective offense.

You people that are saying "makes no sense" are being completely oblivious.

This is more than just Smart as HC...it's a new staff..a new start..new energy...even better recruiting......he has a lot of excellent amenities other than being a new HC...

...CMR was at UGA for 15 yrs....we peaked...it grew stale...a new young guy with something to prove, whom apparently will have full control to put the people he sees best in to position to help our team win...sounds like a good deal to me...(CMR never had that luxury)....we shall see

The one thing that will make or break this hire...is the quality of OC he putts on staff...IMHO

I'm not saying it doesn't make sense. I don't dislike the hire.

It's still risky as hell no matter what anyone here says

but that will never be a problem with Georgia

Correct, but we still weren't recruiting on par with Bama,LSU,UF and sometimes AU.We also had a big problem with player retention and roster mgt.

There are also some red tape and administrative issues that I hear Smart will get concessions on.For whatever reasons CMR was fighting a losing battle with many of those folks until recently but his time had run out before he could see the benefits.
