His ranking included our 3 OOC wins against New Mexico St., Sam Houston and some other Rent-a-Win, maybe ULL. Those game skewed our numbers; an LSU poster recently did a massive breakdown of our defense against SEC opponents, and the numbers were not particularly good--especially number of sacks, tackles for loss of yards and 3rd down conversions. We were hardly an elite defense in 2014.

I don't see much of a drop off. For one thing, our d was not that great in 2014. Also, under Chavis, our interior line was rarely as good as advertised--perhaps a combination of recruiting and Chavis's preference for a reactive rather than proactive defensive line. Linebacking, curiously, was another problem--we've had some good individuals under Chavis, but rarely what you'd call an "SEC-elite" corps of linebackers.

And then there's the infamous "3rd and Chavis." Here's the really odd thing: the further the distance was, the more likely our opponents would succeed in the conversion. So, our opponents would convert a higher percentage of 3rd-and-15's than 3rd-and-10's! Go figure.
