a ---------------------------- can look like------------------------
------------------- Graph
----------- this.
But what the author did was put a line graph from "a" to "this", fulling ignoring the other 4 "words" (years). Formatting sucks, but hopefully my point comes across.
Not to mention, using '04 and '14 could potentially ignore massive recession that took hold for 5 years of that decade.

Well, we did just build a new basketball arena, so I'm not surprised that we had a deficit.

Ha yes, it does, and I fully agree. Especially when it comes to athletic programs. Depending on projects, debt, etc things one year can look drastically different than the next. A one year snapshot of an income statement is a pretty stupid way to make a general, large point like this article does.

Exhibit A in Tiger's point about using multiple years for this kind of analysis.

This is one of the reasons that UAB fans were so outraged when their program was killed. They actually were breaking even since they basically weren't spending anything. (It appears to have turned out well for UAB in the big picture though.)
There are a lot of benefits to sports programs that are hard to capture in dollars and cents. Why else would all of these programs continue to exist and show a negative balance on paper?

The article is misleading.
It gives a red dot to schools with deficient next to how much the program took in.
Makes it look like we are 70 million in the red.
How much was taken in and how much was spent?
We could have been 1 million in defciet or 2$.
It's intentionally misleading.
But let's not bring up the renovations and new basketball facility that had to be paid up front now and hurt 2014 revenue.
Lol at you poors with outdated facilities.
The hump

Meh, I pretty adamantly disagree with this line of thinking generally. If you already have an established program that the alumni base loves and follows? Yes. If you are a commuter school that is looking to create a new revenue stream and make their alums develop a new sense of school pride and give back large chunks of money for athletics (and then eventually academics)? Ehhhhhh
Places like Georgia State took that approach and they quickly learned that is a total fantasy.
