I thought the ACC, Pac 12 and Big Ten were supposed to be the "academic, intellectual" conferences? Maybe Alabama and Georgia should lend them some of their Top 10 accounting grads.

meh, stats like these hardly matter. A lot of programs only break even or go into "deficit" because they spend as much of their revenue in the year as possible on purpose to make sure donors keep giving.

They spent all of their money on North Face vests and boat shoes.

I can't wait to see what 2015 looks like for A&M with the new KF revenue. I would guess going from 118.2 to mid to high 130s.

Most attempt to get to net zero, but none of them like showing deficits. Best case scenario for an athletic foundation is showing $0 profit with high reserves (and solid liquidity ratios), because it shows that you are good stewards of the donors money and are prepared to pay off future debts from expansion.
Most work hard to NOT show deficits, because nothing makes people more wary of your fiduciary abilities than showing a negative number on the Net Income (Expense) line (even if there is a totally reasonable explanation for it).

But.. Ole Miss just received 25 MM from a donor? They are a very classy institution that can be discussed in the same sentence as Princeton and Harvard. Dumb rednecks can't even balance a checkbook

Big Ten should be fine when they negotiate new deal. Both of the years posted were directly before their new media deals were negotiated.
Expect a similar bump the SEC got their current deal...3 schools from red to black.
The rest aren't surprising though. Nor is it very indicative. If you spend $1 more dollar than you bring in, you are in the red.

Books have not been closed? Just guessing, I honestly have no idea.

Well, for one, the article used 2014. For two, most Athletic Foundations are still in the process of wrapping up and releasing 6-30-15 audited financial statements (we still have 1 or 2 that were just sent off to them, so they wouldn't be available for the public quite yet). So, there isn't a complete population of 2015 numbers yet would be my guess.

Fiscally for most schools it is. June to June are the norms for universities

Most universities and their foundations are June 30th year-ends, so they have been closed. However, most all have audits, and those are necessarily completed and reported on yet.

Believe me, there's still enough time for Auburn to throw 180K at a big time recruit and flip the books upside down.

Well we did have a surplus for 2015, and are expecting an even bigger one for 2016

Vanderbilt not listed. I love being a private school. We're like the Keyser Soze of the SEC.

I know MSU doesn't spend a lot on Football, relative to others in the conference, but I don't see how we're turning a profit.

Side note. Straight line graphs are stupid.
