On the 39-yard touchdown pass from Nick Marshall to Sammie Coates that helped Auburn to tie the game at 28-28 with 32 seconds left, Tigers fullback Jay Prosch was 5 yards downfield blocking Alabama linebacker C. J. Mosley on the same side of the field as the pass. When Marshall passed to Coates, it appeared that Prosch was making illegal contact, according to Rule 7-3-8 of the N.C.A.A. rule book.

In an email response to a request for an interpretation of the rule, the Southeastern Conference said, “It is not offensive pass interference when, after the snap, an ineligible receiver immediately charges and contacts an opponent at a point not more than 1 yard beyond the neutral zone and does not continue the contact more than 3 yards beyond the neutral zone.”

Prosch was an eligible receiver and he was making contact with a defender 5 yards down field. Mosley was not able to get to Marshall and Alabama’s defensive back had to come up to try to make the tackle on Marshall, who passed over his head to a wide-open Coates.

Buchanan looked comfortable in the pocket, but he missed some throws he probably shouldn't have.

Kincade made a lot of plays with his legs.

don't go full retard, you're an okay poster, I don't want to lose any respect

Nah. I won't go seccrazy on y'all. Mentioning the article and dropping it. In the end Auburn made the plays and we didn't.

I just think Sammie Coates example was a poor one to use because technically the play was illegal. I would've used the CJ Uzomah catch where Cyrus Jones got fricked up as a better example.

Mocha Lorenzen is gonna roll over the SEC.

Mostly because rolling is his main mode of transport.

The article doesn't prove anything anyway. It is just one guy's opinion. A guy I have never heard of before now. Tim Brando looked at the same play and said it was not a penalty

Nick M. will be throwing to two very talented wide outs who will be left one on one because teams will be scared of the run. He is going to put up some numbers.

The same SEC officials that provided the rule you cited, studied the play as well and determined that it was not illegal. No one outside of gumps and a few Auburn haters believes this play was illegal. He wasn't 5 yards downfield. He was 3 yards downfield when Marshall started his throwing motion and about 3 1/2 when Marshall released. That's why it wasn't called as explained by the refs. But whatever. Not surprised you are still crying.

And Monticello, the question is about the best quarterback, not the best passer. If Nick Marshall runs for 150 a game, throws for 100 and goes undefeated, he is probably the best quarterback in the SEC, but nowhere near the best passer. But as you have heard from plenty of Auburn fans, you are going to see far more active Auburn passing game in 2014. So we shall see.

Ridiculously weak year for QB's following one of the best in SEC history. It's crazy, but hell it might be Jacob Coker. If he can just be a game manager and lead Bama to an SEC title, that is probably all it will take to be the best QB in the SEC with such a weak group.

Do you know how weak last year's group was prior to the season? McCarron, Murray, Manziel, Wallace was it.

The year prior was Murray, Wilson, and you could possibly make a case for Bray because of his WRs. In 2011, Wilson, Murray and that was it. As a matter of fact, the 2011 squad was so bad that only four QBs passed for over 1600 yards. We have four coming back that accomplished that.

I get so tired of you short memory folks with all this hyperbole about a weak QB year. It's like you've all forgotten that last year was the humongous exception to the rule in the SEC. Marshall and Dak have the talent and talent around them to go 35, 35 (3500 total yards 35 TD) and have the production with limited resources, experience and playtime to prove it. Wallace dropped 7 ints off his first year and had over 350 yards and 6 TDs again in the run game. Mauk threw for 900 yards in four games with 10 TDs and 2 ints. UGA is loaded at WR, Mason is a 5th year senior and Mike Bobo is still coaching. For how bad Cox did in turnovers, he still threw for nearly 2600 yards and 24 TDs. Thompson is possibly in the top five of most experienced back ups in the nation. He brings back a good core of receivers, I can't see less than 2800 passing yards. Sumlin always has a top QB even back to Drew Brees at Purdue. Somebody is throwing for 3k with 20+ TDs.

Coker is a realistic possibility.

SEC has a weak crop this year and JC has better tools and more talent at his disposal than any of his competitors. I'll be rooting for him this year.
