Well here goes,
In the NFL teams are placed in divisions within conferences. There is a playoff structure that has rules based on win/loss records, division winners, head to head, etc. Those rules then dictate seeding and those teams then play in a single elimination tournament to determine a champion. Every team and fan knows the rules on getting into the playoff and how the seeding will occur before the season even starts.
But in college we have decided the best way to determine a champion is to get 13 people together in a room, each with their own idea of what the criteria should be to rank teams, then have those 13 people debate what the rankings should be.
Some years, conference championships are very important, some years they are not. Some years out of conference scheduling is very important, some years they are not. Some years the number of ranked teams you defeat are important, some years they are not. Some years head to head is important, some years they are not.
Also, in college football we change the make up of those 13 people every year, so new opinions can be brought in and new ideas on what is and isn't important.
This way the criteria and rules are always changing, which leads to uncertainty and anger, but also entertainment.

Because the last time Bama gave up 63 points was never.

It's quite simple. The committee watched the game and knew it wasn't pass interference.

I didn't even realize there were any hookers in Knoxville. I thought all the women in Knoxville were volunteers.

The issue is that Bama's two losses are one possession, last play-type losses, while Tennessee's two losses were significant.
Yes, Tennessee beat Bama head-up so I think there's a counter argument. However, I also think the committee thinks this Hooker-less team isn't that team.

Bama is also two plays away from 8-4.
Tennessee had an overtime win vs Pitt and a five point win vs Florida. You can play this game all day

It’s obviously because of the SCar loss. Tennessee got mudholed and that is outweighing the last second win over Bama rightly or wrongly.

but the selection criteria clearly states that UT should be ahead.
No, it doesn't. All you Vol fans want to overlook the very first statement in the selection criteria...
"When circumstances at the margins indicate that teams are comparable...,"
If that statement isn't true, then the remaining criteria are meaningless.
When you get sodomized by a 7-4 team to the tune of 63 points, you are no longer "at the margins" and "comparable". A last-second victory at home doesn't change that.
Alabama has never in its history given up 63 points. You were an utterly putrid excuse for a football team that day, and the stench of that anal raping doesn't just go away.

Because it’s a tv show. Bama is a better brand.

Bama has better losses maybe? Plus, it's becoming apparent that Tennessee's wins against Bama and esp. LSU are kind of fluky. I don't know.

Who wrote the 2 blowout vol losses into the script?

By that logic Tennessee is three plays away from 7-5.
They are not, however, 2 plays from being undefeated.

whereas Tennessee got its arse kicked in its 2 losses
Lost to #1 UGA and were upset by the hottest team in the country.
Bama lost head to head to the Vols (giving up 50 points) and lost to an average LSU team.
Not really close.
