Why does Tennessee use a dog when they're the Volunteers? Why does Auburn use an eagle sometimes when they're the tigers? Why does Texas A&M use Lassie when they're the Aggies? Lots of teams do this. The real explanation is simple: you couldn't very well have a wave as a mascot.
