It is not just his Ole Miss ties in that he would not be able to vote them but that with the only 100% SEC guy in the room, he could be the proponent for the other 13 schools. In addition he could make sure the other 12 voters could not kill off other SEC teams in the discussions.

In essence he was the SEC's "fly on the wall" in the room.

I thought he was just stepping down for this season while he goes through surgery? Not permanently.

That is in the OP, when and if he comes back has still to become fact until he is actually back at the table so to speak.

The bigger and more immediate issue was his representation as the only "pure SEC" person of the entire 13. That he in not being replaced by another pure SEC person means even if he is only out for the 2014 cycle, his absence will be real.
