Don't let this distract you from the fact bama blew a 14-0 lead

Yet another bonehead call by Dabo. He gets bailed out all the time. Dude is, without a doubt, the worst in-game decision maker in America.

Dabo could have Clemsoned that title away with that call.

How so?
I too debated that decision, since (at a glance) it seemed too risky, & possibly too contrived as "payback" for Nick Saban's game-changing call in last year's NCG.
But on further review, it seems like a pretty brilliant call to me, certainly not "bone-headed". More important, it was perfectly executed. Obviously the play had been practiced a lot. The kick kept the ball close to the ground, so as long as there was no high bounce & no jump ball, there's no way a Bama player can field it running. Whatever happens, as soon as a Bama player touches the ball, the last second ticks off. So if there's a scrum for the ball & Bama gets possession, it's still game over. As it turned out, Clemson got possession, so the second remained on the clock but all we had to do was one snap from victory formation.
In retrospect, I think the chances of Bama scoring off of that play were much less than for a deep kick or squib kick, which would have allowed them either to fair catch the ball & preserve the last second on the clock for a long hail mary, or to field the ball & then lateral it around & keep the play alive until possibly someone breaks free.
Regardless, our special teams executed the play perfectly.
