Been a Bama fan my whole life. Couldn't afford tuition so started JC. Got draft notice in 1967, served in Vietnam and have worked for the Army for 46 years. No one who attended UA has a greater love for the program. If you elitist A-Holes want to lable me a "Walmart" fan go ahead. I will say this if you went to school at UA because your Daddy paid your way you have no more right to cheer than all of the Walmart fans across the nation. A bought and paid for class ring does not make you a true fan.

Bama fan all my life, attending UA as we speak on scholarships from an ACT higher than your IQ.
But maybe you could get some of this bandwagon action too if your team was worth a damn.

frick off. I never went there but have been a Bama fan since the 70's. Stayed a fan thru thick and thin. Likely better educated and more knowledgeable about college football than you. So frick off. Again.

Here's the issue...
Last week I'm at the doctor and I'm wearing a MS State tee shirt. There's a dude in there that truly looks like Joe Dirt. Sleeveless shirt, mullet, earring, tattoos. Jean shorts and work boots. Looks like he hasn't showered in three days. And there's nothing wrong with any of that....many of you Bama fans here may look just like that. :)
But he notices my shirt and starts running smack. Using poor grammar to do so. It is clear that this guy can't spell Tuscaloosa much less find it on a map. Probably hasn't been within 100 miles of the campus in his life.
Those are the fans the original poster is talking about. Every school has some fans like that, but at Bama, it's an epidemic. True Bama alums or people with ties to the school are typically not insufferable, and are generally pleasant.
ETA: I don't lump all sidewalk fans in with the guy I interacted with. There are some good ones. My comments are directed at fans like this guy.

I hear this a lot. I fall pretty squarely into this category. I was born and raised in Central Louisiana. I love Louisiana and I'm proud of my Louisiana heritage.
When I was around 12 years old I heard a lot about Alabama football.(it was 1992) So, I started paying attention to them and became a fan. Never had any influences toward LSU until high school, but by that time I was firmly all Bama. I did not go to school there nor do I have any ties to the school. But, I just don't feel like I should feel bad for being a fan of a team that I started supporting when I was 12.
And, yeah I was still all Bama for the Dubose and Shula years. Unfortunately I was in attendance for the loss to LA Tech in Birmingham in 1999.

It's crazy how people get on their soapbox and try to criticize Bama's fan base. SEC fans are some of the greatest supportive fans on the planet. If you want to point to few azzhats, then stereotype the whole fan base by all means do that if that makes you feel better.

Thanks for your service! You have earned the right to support any team you wish. All schools get money and support from their alumi, but SEC schools also get money from merchandise, ticket sales, and tv viewership. Most of this money comes from blue collar people who never had the chance to attend the school. It is mainly because of fans who didn't attend the school that allow for better facilities, huge stadiums, and money for scholarships. So frick the snobs who think they are better fans because they went to the school. frick them right in the ear.

I do run into people pretty often that see me in a Bama shirt and start telling me about how they're Bama fans too. Then after a little conversation they clear it up and actually say,"Really I'm just a Nick Saban fan."
Think what you want to think about someone like that, but it's never a "bum" that I'm talking to.

I was born and raised in Tuscaloosa and have been a Bama fan since the early 70's. My family spent a lot of time at Coach Bryant's house because he and my Dad were friends. When it came to college, I chose to go to Georgia Tech because of their engineering school. Now, I pull for both. I suppose my loyalties would be divided if they ever play each other, but it has been over 30 years since that happened.
Does this make me a bandwagon fan?

I popped out of my Mom loving Bama since day one (Thanks Dad!!!), and lived in Florida since I was 2 yrs old. I'm 40+, I've never attended the University of Alabama, never been to a Bama game in person, but guess what, I just got accepted to Bama! Now, does that make me more of a Bama fan since I'll be going to Bama? I don't feel any different to tell ya the truth, and I still love Bama just as much as I did before receiving acceptance news. So this whole you've gotta attend a university, live in the same state, or have to witness games to be a true-fan is total BS. If you enjoy the team you're pulling for, that's all one needs, be dammed what someone else thinks!

Everybody outside the state gets called a bandwagon fan now because Alabama is king, it's just assumed. It's like people don't realize that Alabamians can move across state borders.
For the record, getting season tickets at Alabama is expensive and requires years of sitting on a waiting list, so it sounds like your pharmacist friend is as much of a fan as anyone else whether he's ever lived in Alabama or not.

Depends on how you got the money. If it was just handed down to you then I would agree. If you are a Self Made Millionaire then it is different. Wealth is a powerful thing. Being part of the Wealthy Elite is to be taken seriously.

i don't understand the difference. A fan is a fan, i know people born and raised in alabama that are true diehard bama fans just never had the circumstance to go there. My grandmother who was born, lived, and died in Florida loved Bear and paid for me to go there. I know the elitist won't like it but the reasons people love a university are not necessarily tied to graduation from that university.
