NCAA not as toothless as claimed. Just busted Notre Dame.

And Ole Miss isn't Notre Dame.

is there any punishment as futile as vacating wins?

Lol good point. USC was nasty from 03-05, and Reggie bush won a Heisman. Telling me it didn't happen won't change that.

generally I agree, but having a national championship stripped is still significant. and the vacated wins, in USC's case, was the most minor part of their sanctions. I don't think Ole Miss will get the USC treatment, but I also don't understand why the NCAA is viewed as completely spineless. I think the correct adjective is inconsistent. They hammered Ohio State and Jim Tressel for players getting free tattoos. They hammered USC for Reggie Bush. But then they let Miami skate for botching the investigation and have yet to hammer UNC for gross academic fraud.

I think they're really just unpredictable more so than spineless. There is just no rhyme or reason of when or how they will punish schools for similar offenses.

Agreed, I just think the majority of fans who haven't had any major violations imposed on their team don't understand how tough they can be at times.

Yeah, our football program has never had major sanctions, but I definitely know how tough they can be after what they did to our basketball program, especially given the player they were penalized for later admitted he was lying. Unfortunately his admission of lying to the NCAA came 9 years later.

True, kind of scary. I'd naturally assume money talks but then again USC and Ohio State would have been heard if that were the case.

Maybe it was lobbying by rivals?

Think about all the P5 programs that have had bowl bans since 1990:
Auburn
UNC
Alabama
Ohio State
USC
Penn State
Mississippi State
Kentucky
Cal
Texas Tech
Miami
Texas A&M
Ole Miss
Minnesota
Florida
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma

There are a lot of major players in that group. I don't think the NCAA is too scared to hammer a major program. The only non P5 program to receive a bowl ban since 1990 are UCF and Houston. Of the teams listed above you have Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, Florida, Oklahoma, Miami, Penn State, and USC, who are all among the power elites in college football.

[quote]"The NCAA basically told me if they didn't find any 'wrongdoing' that I would only be awarded one year left of my college career," wrote Earl, who arrived at KU in January 1997."They said, 'If we don't find any dirt on coach Brown, you won't be allowed to play but one more year at Kansas. ... If we do find out wrongdoing by coach Brown, you will be able to play two and a half more seasons.'"
Earl wrote he told the NCAA "some little things," including that LSU gave him money.
"I was pressured into telling them SOMETHING," Earl wrote.[quote]

wow...this is disgusting, what I just read...if the NCAA gestapo are capable of doing this to LSU, can you imagine what they are doing in Oxford? and for those of you who are delighting in this because we kicked your asses a few times on the football field, just wait. next time it might be your team getting shafted.

Normally it does hurt, but for Ole Miss it would be brutal. they would go back to a situation where despite playing Alabama for decades they don't even have double digit wins against them.

the NCAA can never erase the memory I have of 40 thousand Crimson Tide fans in a mass exodus of Bryant denny stadium with 12 minutes left in the 4th quarter, their team down 43-24...that memory cant be erased, from my head OR theirs.

They got hammered for the cover up, not the tattoos themselves.
