Kenny Hill would easily start at Ole Miss this year.

I'm all for some help with offensive coaching. Let's be real for a minute. Can you honestly say you've been happy with our offense under freeze?

Freeze would. Hell he had to stoop all the way down and pick up Kelly

In 2012 when we could run the ball and had a downfield passing game, yes.

Otherwise, no. I have been nervous about every offensive snap since 2013.

We have struggled to get in a rhythm many times, and it has cost us a few games. You can probably chalk that up to a few things:
1) Poor play calling;
2) Poor run blocking;
3) Inconsistency under center; and
4) Lack of a solid ground game.

Chad Kelly is an even worse version of Bo Wallace

Jeffrey Wright on Ole Miss rivals had a really good write up about replacing Bo Wallace in terms of pure production. His main point was that yes, while Bo put up a ton of big numbers at ole miss, he was more of a product of the system. I think it shows that Freeze has a better system than it has looked the past few years. It's a pay link so I won't steal big chunks of it but just to put things into perspective:

quote:

While Wallace ranked fifth in the SEC in passing efficiency, he ranked 11th in the SEC in both Raw QBR and Adjusted QBR (Adjust QBR factors opponent quality.). Wallace finished 2014 with a Raw QBR 45.4 and an Adjusted QBR of 56.9. In addition to the quarterbacks who finished above Wallace in passing efficiency, Dylan Thompson (South Carolina), Joshua Dobbs (Tennessee), Brandon Allen (Arkansas), Matty Mauk (Missouri), and Patrick Towles (Kentucky) all finished above Wallace in Raw QBR. - See more at: LINK

Basically Wallace was slightly above average. He had to deal with a bum shoulder and he was extremely hurried because our line sucked but he's not irreplaceable. Swag won't have to be lights out to fill in the gap until Shea gets to campus

The problem isn't Bro, or the HUNH, or even the pace.

It's that Freeze didn't even try to run it. When you don't run it and you're HUNH, the 3-and-outs happen extremely quickly because you're stopping the clock between each chuck.

Running the ball allows you to create lengthier drives in terms of the clock and increases TOP. Some teams use pace to derive a personnel or a stamina-related advantage. But it's a double-edged sword. For Ole Miss last year, you felt both sides of said sword.

Freeze has to develop a ground attack. At least something serviceable. It will be really tough to do this year because I think the West in general is going to be SAVAGE on rushing attacks in 2015. Arky, Bama, LSU & OM themselves will be murderous on run games.

If Treadwell doesn't return as a dominant player, and/or Ole Miss can't get a QB to produce throwing it, they will really come down to earth this year, IMO.

I saw a stat last year about the run plays we would run and it was something like 100 times this certain play was run for 9 total yards, so basically freeze was very predictable in his play calling

I agree with you, we need balance if we want to succeed. But we had WRs bigger than our RBs last year so freeze was extremely limited on what running he could do. Also the line was garbage, or at least one half of it was. Interesting stats:

When we rushed behind the LT (Tunsil) or LG:
6.3 yards per attempt
20 runs of 10+ yards
31% 1st down rate
108 yards per game

When we rush behind the RT, RG, C:
2.2 yards per attempt
12 runs of 10+ yards
14% first down rate
46 yards per game

We need some big backs like we used to have and we need the other half of the line to step up.

I've heard plenty say it.

Freeze's offense and offensive scheme are fine. We do not need to hire an OC

Even if you consider his scheme is fine, why wouldn't you think that it would be beneficial to hire an up and coming offensive mind to take on that specific role. Freeze has to tend to many other things, it wouldn't hurt.

quote:

We slowed the offense way down last year and our o-line sucked at run blocking.

The o-line sucking is out of his control to an extent. Why did we slow it down?

He slowed it down 5 or 6 games into the season when he realized teams couldn't score on us so the offense only needed to produce 3 or so good drives per game.

What do all of these stats have to do with the Bears finishing behind MSU year after year?

We averaged 32 passes and 36 runs per game. The bottom line is that we had a poor oline that suffered a lot of injuries and ended up w/ a lot of third an long because we couldn't run the ball well. Also, I don't think Freeze wanted to run Wallace much because we really didn't have anyone ready behind him. If the oline doesn't improve, we will be the same or maybe slightly better version of what we were last year. that's it in a nutshell.

Texag is brilliant as always. A highly recruited quarterback who fought with his coaching staff cause he was a dumbass is clearly a worse version of a guy whose offers out of high school were Arkansas State and Tennessee Tech.

If anything speaks to Hugh Freeze's accomplishments on offense it is that he took that unwanted guy who had washed out of Arkansas State and had that much success with him even when the kid busted up his shoulder. I actually get irritated with a lot of our own fans who beat up on the guy for not being better than he was. Could he have worked harder and been better, maybe. But when you look at where he started and where he finished, he was a godsend for us when we were at our worst.
