They have them now. Black bears migrate in a giant loop from Mississippi, through North Central Alabama, to North Georgia, back through Tennessee...to Mississippi.
When I was just a kid, I found some bear tracks around a lake near my house while fishing, and as a teen I saw a dead bear on the side of the interstate right outside of Atlanta. Everyone laughed at me for years when I told those stories, until a bear was hit by a car in Downtown Birmingham in the mid-nineties and an article came out showing their migratory pattern.
Vindicated yet again.

They are just trying to fit in with Bama/Auburn/Tennessee I guess, in the make up your damn mind what your mascot/nickname is category.
