Schools tend to make a big deal about their Heisman winners.
From 1958? I’ll say that again… from
1958? Heisman winners from 1958 basically aren’t Heisman winners because the league wasn’t integrated then. So basically no accomplishment.

What would an Ole Miss fan know about Heisman winners?

Are LSU fans still having their day of rage over what another baseball program is doing?

Then make it a team statue and include Kevin Graham and Justin Bench, the other leaders. It’s not like it couldn’t be done
Man...you made some really shitty takes last night.
Like what...

I actually agree that the new statue is ridiculous. I loved Elko and respect the hell out of everything he did, but it’s quite embarrassing. Maybe he makes it big in the next couple of years and it could be warranted, but good lord it makes Ole Miss baseball look very small time/never been there before.
Nailed it, Ole Miss fan. Glad to know one of you is out there with the same take.
Quickly creating a statue only 18 months after winning the whole thing reeks of desperation to put a statue up. And to your point, imagine being part of that championship winning Ole Miss team and seeing your school choose simply one one of your teammates to be immortalized with a damn statue simply bc he was playing the best at the time.
And also to your point, the timing is hilariously bad with Ole Miss baseball being really bad right now. This board would’ve laughed its off at LSU putting up a Joe Burrow statue in the midst of the 5-5 2020 season, but even then that would’ve made more sense in that Joe Burrow was the best player in the whole sport that season and one of the best to ever play the sport. Elko was not, albeit being very good at the time.

Elko wasn’t just some normal dude, dipshit. He did something special that most people do and are lauded for but never actually achieve. He came back and fricking won it all - after playing a season injured that he could have sat out, rehabbed, and gotten drafted.
There is probably a plethora of college athletes who came back for a 5th year and aided in winning a national championship for their team, and I guarantee probably zero of them have a statue on their campus a damn year and a half later Feel free to correct me

How many other teams have players outside of their stadiums after a CWS? Sure they may have some, but they were also ones that made it big in the league and also years after they were done with a pro career
I would be fine with a statue of JJ Schwarz, Alex Faedo, Mike Rivera, Jonathan India, or anyone else who was on the 2017 team. I don't see what the problem is. You are wanting to remember a huge moment in your school's sports history, so it doesn't matter if it matters to anyone else.

Why do we see highlight reels of Billy Cannon’s punt return against OM? He won a title in 1958 which is irrelevant as are OM’s titles/dynasty from the same era.. those don’t count yet year to year we see Billy Cannon’s shitty, grainy, wouldnt make the top 10 today footage yet LSU has sort of put him on a pedestal and nobody gives a shite? So yeah maybe thats why we put a statue up because the guy similarly helped his team to a title in an era that is actually modern and relevant. Carry on.
Billy Cannon was a Heisman-winning national champion who didn’t get a statue erected on stadium until 60 years after he played. His legacy lived on for 6 decades before being bestowed with the honor of having a statue
Ole Miss was so championship-starved and desperate for a statue of an athlete that actually won something that they put one up a guy less than 2 years he left the school

That wasn’t my point and I don’t really care for getting into an obscure research project. In the context of Ole Miss that year, their school culture, etc. it fits. You are right though. We have statues of people like Frank Broyles, tGoat John McDonald(also, so much hardware that there are about 40 silver pillars in front of our outdoor T&F facility because we weren’t going to build 40 statues of the same coach), and Nolan Richardson.

The statue itself is not a problem. It was just hilariously too soon. You guys didnt make Spurrier one until 2011.

What years did these guys coach for Arkansas and then what year did they get honored with a statue? Maybe then you’ll see the whole point of the thread

Seems like the answer is yes.

I would like a statue of “the hit” next. P Willy is in the hall of fame now so I think it’s within the rules.
Or we could do “The Hit” part deux and have a statue of Jayden Daniels getting tossed.

Yeah and Tebow got one at the same time. 15 months after he played his last game.
And I highly doubt we checked with anyone to see if it was OK to do so.
