Just curious and a fan could probably explain quicker than googling.
Big school in a big football state with money. Why'd it take so long? I'll hang up and listen. Thanks.

Same reason LSU was terrible until Saban got there. School decided to hire a proven head coach and throw more money into the program.

Didn't they have a population boom in the late 60s/early 70s?

The football team was very good in the 80's...if one overlooks the 19,000 infractions.

They had a great team in 84, but were stripped of the SEC title and LSU took their place in the Sugar Bowl. Had talent but were overshadowed by Georgia and Auburn. Could never put the peaces together until Spurrier got there.

Even if you give them being good in the 80s. It's still strange.

Just emphasis. Bryant ran the 60's and 70's. And as said earlier, population boom...and then just desire to do it.

I'd expect this from the Cheerio Kid segment. As a matter of point, LSU was conference champion/co-champion 7 times before UF got their first (that counted) in 1991.

Before the 60's Florida had a very small population, during the 60's and 70's the Bear cheated his way to several championships, and in the 80's Florida discovered that they could win if they cheated, then in the 90's, a Tennessean (Spurrier) went down there and made them what they are today.

Weren't they a womenz-only school up until 1983?

FSU back in the day maybe?

Everyone is mostly right. The population boom in the 70's and 80's propelled UF, FSU and Miami. We were all good, and we (UF) got the NCAA hammer into oblivion, which set us back a few years. Everyone was cheating, but we were cheating worse than Lane Kiffin on his best day, and super easy to catch, esp after an insider who was passed over for promotions turned on us.
BTW, Spurrier was born in Miami, FL, and if he wasn't such a lazy recruiter at UF, we would have one or two more natty's and UM and FSU would have less.

FSU until the early 50's I believe. Wimminz went to FSU, Menfolk went to UF.

Spurrier was never known as a 'work-aholic'...likes golfing too much. I'm pretty sure that's why he took the SCar job...Hilton Head and Augusta.

But he was raised in Tennessee, so he is a Tennessean.

Yep, but he works his arse off now compared to UF. He said Rex Grossman and his Dad caught him in the office the only day he was there in the month of June when they were on a tour of schools.

Call him what you want, he is a native Floridian who got out of Tennessee as quick as he could. LOL
Just kidding, Tennessee is a beautiful state.

I can believe it. Listening to him speak over last couple of decades you can tell he's just a 'good ole boy' that enjoys life and isn't in too much of a hurry for anything. Gawd bless him.

This for the most part. They were hands down the best team in the country in 1984. Probably the 5th best team in the country in 1983.
However, UGA was dominant the first few years in the 80's and AU won the SEC in '83, '87, '88, and '89.
In 1984 UF won the SEC but had to vacate it (they never gave the trophy back though, said they lost it). Charlie Pell was buying up players left and right, SMU style and the NCAA crippled them for the next 5 years.
Then Spurrier arrived as UF came off probation and you know the rest.
