OP is spot on and it applies to all teachers and coaches. Bad instructors copy a system and teach that same system to everyone. Shows a lack of intelligence and understanding but they can become successful because they can sell their magic BS system to less intelligent people who don't know any better. Occasionally it works and no one in sports wants to ever admit they were wrong. Everyone wants to argue which system is better but the best teams don't care, they devolope the best possible system for their individual rosters.

Seems like the big name schools have been cheap and hired head coaches with out much experience . Both big time programs in the big 10 went all out on big time coaches and it payed off.

If I was looking for a quality coach, id ask the following questions:

-Was this coach "fast-tracked" to the position he currently holds?
-Has this coach proven himself at multiple levels/positions?
-Has this coach taken average players and developed them into good players?
-Has this coach ridden the success of one or two elite talented players?
-Has this coach clearly shown the ability to adapt after adversity?
-Has this coach shown the ability to sustain a successful program for 4 or more seasons?

Honestly looking out at a very superficial level right now, its hard to find guys that can answer all the questions correctly. Herman would worry me a bit as a Texas fan.

Coaches id give a good look to if I were hiring:
Willie Taggart USF
Craig Bohl Wyoming(he is 58 though)
PJ Fleck(still somewhat unproven)
Justin Fuente(also somewhat unproven)

Willie Taggart should get a offer from a power 5 team soon and Fuente has done a good job in his first year at VT. I would put both of them up their with Herman . If Fuente keeps up on the path he is on now he will get an elite job offer .

Not necessarily... the REC has the SEC/NCAA in their pockets. The only possible way to knock their door of corruption down would be getting the feds involved. But ever since the elf on the shelf Jeff Sessions became a member of Trump's cabinet, you can hang that up.

That's a real special little world you live in there, Percy.

Fuente and Taggert may get an offer after this season. I mentioned in a thread on the coaching changes board, if I were UT, id ditch Butch Jones and go grab Bohl at Wyoming

The Texas roster is stacked with 4 and 5 star player...and yet they have two consecutive losing seasons and just lost to Kansas.

Texas has nowhere near the talent of bammer. It's not even close. Please stop.

To the OP - great thread and discussion.

IMO, there are two (relatively) new dynamics in play:
1) Coaches gravitate to the new generation of offense styles because these styles work. They are less talent intensive, i.e., a shortcut to success on O.
2) But the coaches that buy into this have the mindset of rather winning a shootout than a blowout. They don't give enough weight to the other aspects of the game that are essential to long term success, e.g., recruiting talent on D, ST's, defense, clock and game mgmt, field position.

I think Sumlin has seen the light (hiring Chavis).

Chris Peterson is opportunistic. He won with Dan Hawkins' guys in a weak league and then rode success with a very good QB for several more years. He jumped to UW at the right time. They sucked last year but this year many of the other teams are down and Washington looks good. Peterson's success will end when he loses his QB or the rest of that league regroups.

Saban - yes. Harbaugh - yes. Meyer - sometimes. Those guys have the common talents of - top level recruiting, obsessive personalities, cult of personality surrounding them, player development, top tier schemes. Meyer is probably the most passive of the three and sometimes coaches "scared" which is why he's a little bit below the other two in my opinion.

The key to being a great coach is to recruit great players and have them play with great effort on a consistent basis. Period!
