I get why you would take your son a tour of UGA campus, I really do, but don't you have a local Scared Straight program? Seems like an awful lot of unnecessary driving.
I'm sorry, Dawgs. Y'all actually do have a great campus and collegiate town atmosphere. And lots of athletic criminals.

we get on 78 and literally dead end into the varsity parking lot/spring street without making any turns.
The road does but 78 technically turns at Juniper.

Ok that part is true, you get let out in the back of the Varsity parking lot when you hit Spring.
I was thinking of it in terms of from the North Avenue front entrance with the sign.
And only a year or two ago did they update that very last block of Ponce by the Fox theater to be two ways. It was one way for the longest time, eta which made it impossible to get immediately back on Ponce going home.

It turns into ponce after juniper. My point still stands that after getting on 78, you make 0 turns before arriving at the varsity. Quit semantic-ing me to death dammit!

No it's always Ponce after changing from Scott Boulevard. The coding is independent of the name
ETA: Little history lesson
US 78 currently spans from Memphis to Charleston. It was previously associated with the Bankhead Hwy system that spanned coast to coast. Parts of the Alabama stretch of US 78 and the surface streets coded as US 78 in NW Atlanta were named to reflect that name sake. It gave rise to the naming of the notoriously rough neighborhood of Bankhead in Atlanta. They've since renamed Bankhead HWY to Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy to rebrand from the tarnished Bankhead identity.
Pretty sure they're about to make an interstate out of a portion of it from Birmingham to Memphis. If you've been to Ole Miss games recently you'll see progress on that front.

Traffic downtown is terrible between 3pm-8pm. Get through before 3pm

I usually go I-20 east to Hwy 138 in Conyers. Take 138 to Monroe and merge onto 78 there. That will run you right into West Athens. A number of ways to enter Athens from there but I usually exit 78 to Epps Bridge Rd and that dumps you onto Atlanta Hwy.

Just make sure you leave early enough out of Atlanta to get past Hi-Hope Rd on 316 by 2:45, then you are fine. Most likely, 78 will just slow you down, too many lights and a higher ratio of retarded drivers than 316 (it's metro Atlanta, going to be a lot of idiot drivers regardless so be ready, seriously nobody knows how to drive out here).

What everyone else said. Either 316 or 78, depending on traffic and time of day you're heading to Athens.
I don't recommend going all the way up I-85 and taking the Jefferson/129 exit. You may as well exit onto 316.

Why would you be leaving from "downtown Atlanta", is that where you live? If you are coming thru the airport, it's not downtown and you don't want to go thru downtown, you go around. Not sure what you are doing, but have a safe journey.
