Haven't even seen 4 teams yet but already want to go to 8.
And when they announce 8, idiots will demand 16.
Then it will be 24, or 32.
Yeah, let's keep going until the college football regular season is as meaningful as the college basketball regular season and nobody gives a shite the entire year until the tournament.
Great plan.

you know that ever since a playoff of any sort was agreed on, the post season expansion is INEVITABLE.... heck I'd say the wheels have been in motion since 1992 when the first ever playoff game went down in the SEC.
Your cause is noble, but it's been defeated years ago.

Four is too many and the selection process is idiotic.
BCS and two teams was a very good system for college football imo.

Four teams is the absolute best number. Eight team playoffs will dilute the regular season too much. With four teams, there will be many interesting scenarios late in the season.
The BCS was terrible. It ruined New Year's Day, which was always the biggest football day of the year.

I would like to see an eight team playoff where only 4 of the 5 "power'" conference champs are locks for the playoffs. The other 4 playoff participants would be determined with BCS rankings regardless of conference affiliation (meaning more than two teams per conference is possible). The playoff committee would then take these 8 teams and seed them. The top 4 host the bottom four before advancing to the current 4 team "bowl playoff" configuration ( with adjustments to when the games are to be played as time allows). In this way conference championships in the power 5 means something as does the BCS. If you are the odd champ out in the power 5, the BCS can save them, if not, they didn't deserve to be there IMO. This set up allows for non power 5 outliers (Boise States, etc.) to have a shot AND allows for deep power 5 conferences (SEC, Big 12, PAC 12) to put two, or even three teams in the mix. Just my thoughts.

I was talking BCS in relation to National Title game, not the BCS bowl tie-ins. The tie-in system was bad.

4 is fine. Originally I wanted 8 but letting 8 teams qualify just cheapens the regular season even further. The ncaa regular season is special and is what sets it apart from the NFL.
I do think the selection committee is an awful idea. Why not just stick with the BCS formula to decide the top 4 teams? The polls still factor in so there is a human element involved.

Agreed. 4 is perfect, until my team gets left out of the selection.

Just wait until you see how entertaining the end of the regular season will be with a 4 team playoff. Two teams is horrible because it produces too many meaningless games.
The four team playoff will be a TV ratings bonanza for college football, especially New Year's Day. Which of course is why we're now having a playoff.

I disagree, 8 is too many. 4 is more appropriate given the length of regular season and number of realistic contenders on an average year.
Upvoted. The perfect initial system would have maintained the BCS rankings and put 1-4 in a playoff. OP does not address the fact that the college football playoff has drastically shrunk the number of votes needed to determine the teams that compete for a championship. Bias will be strong, and SEC fatigue is still alive and strong. The current playoff's infrastructure is not in the fans' best interests, especially the SEC's.

Spurrier said it best a few years ago when he was asked about a playoff. He said something about how "the girls seem to handle it fine" referencing the women's hoops tourny
He also referenced lower division NCAA football playoffs
AND, if players are about to start getting "compensation" - that negates much of the arguments against a longer season
Please don't compare basketball playoffs to FBS football. FBS football features fewer than 130 teams. College basketball features several hundred teams in the top division, so naturally more spots are needed.

Take the new playoff system. Make It a requirement to be a Conference Champion to be in the playoffs. Perfect system.
That provision would be BS. I want to see the best teams in the playoff. One may be left out, but if we go purely off of conference championships, then several very good teams will be left out.
Not all conferences are created equal. Leaving a 1-loss Alabama or LSU out in favor of a 1 or 2-loss highly ranked Big 10 team would be a travesty. Sure, that Big 10 more than likely isn't going to win the playoff, but that basically means a spot was wasted. The SEC and PAC 12 are the only 2 conferences that are worthy of respect right now. The other conferences are weak and may feature a team that appears great, only due to the lack of competition in their respective conference.

We definitely need to see how the four teams playoffs go before jumping to 8. 4 may turn out to be just fine.

The reason 4 is perfect:
It's big enough to ensure all truly deserving teams have a shot.
It's small enough that making it is still very difficult and every single game in the regular season could make or break you.
2 was too small, because it could exclude legit teams.
8+ would be too many, as making it would become rather trivial.
People really want a 16 team playoff? Yeah, where like 12-14 of the same teams make the playoffs every year?
So like "Yeah we just lost to LSU and Auburn, but who cares we could still sneak into the #16 seed when the games REALLY matter!"

LOL..... Why? Are you serious? You don't know why?
Alabama and LSU ALWAYS benefit from bias polls and eSECpn.
SMH
They know that most times the would get the nod vs other teams in 4 man format..... throw 16 teams in and you would hurt their chances to win the trophy. let's see..... 4 teams vs 16.

16 is the perfect number. Teams that get better as the season progresses, even with a couple of losses, could get in.
2011 Texas A&M is a perfect example of this. They would probably have won a real playoff because they were a far better team at the end of the season than when it began.
Also, great programs wouldn't be afraid of playing each other OOC because they could still get in with 2 or 3 losses. Imagine some of the great matchups during the regular season instead of the cupcake feasts we see now.

I assume you mean 2012 A&M. 2011 A&M choked away 5 2+ score 2nd half leads

I was not comparing the basketball postseason to the football postseason
I was agreeing with Spurs, if the women that play basketball can stand an extra month of play, then the men that play football can as well

You should take the 5 power conference winners
Top independent
Top non power con winner
Wild card
That is my 8

You don't see how this cheapens the regular season?
College football's regular season has the most meaningful games week in and week out.
What you're purposing basically makes the first half of the season largely meaningless, as teams could drop 2 or 3 games and still have playoff hopes.
I like every week having games that have national championship implications, rather than just a few playoff games at the end.
College basketball's regular season sucks arse for this very reason.
