I guarantee you I've seen Rick Barnes coach more games than you, and I'm not saying he's the best X's and O's guy. What I am saying is that he will do something for Tennessee similar to what he did for Texas, which is put the program back on the map. I think Barnes is a terrible coach, and his time at Texas was up, but Tennessee needs this type of hire right now IMO.

I am by no means a big BB guy but I believe this to be an accurate way to view this hire.

OK, i knew somebody was going to post the overall record.

Let me ask you this..Is jay wright a good coach?? How about looking up his total wins and losses..Its a very good record. But he usually ends up exiting early in march. Same with rick barnes.

Just go ahead and look up some of the players ol rick has coached.. Its mind blowing at the talent he has. But hey dont let the facts get in the way..

Oh and another LOL at the georgia fan saying he has watched more texas games than a texas fan. Jesus.

I like that you linked to an ESPN ranking of top college basketball coaches in attempt to make your point. That very list actually proves my point and has Marshall as a top 10 coach.

Marshall ranked 8th best cosch in nation

Name a game, or a player.

I've also said Barnes should have been fired from Texas (11th highest salary and two top 25 finishes in 7 years don't mix), but Tennessee is on the verge of a complete catastrophe. Barnes won't let that happen, despite all of the talent he squandered in Austin.

Eh. I'm not terribly worried about the criticism. Every time we hire anybody it comes. A coach tho' shouldn't stay at any one school as long as Barnes stayed at Texas. It leads to complacency, especially when they build a powerhouse of sorts or just a consistent player in the tourney even when that team fails to clench the title.

I think the change of scenery will do him good. And UT is in an excellent location for recruiting with the population boom all over the Mid-South/East Coast plus proximity to the Midwest (that same geography benefits UK, Duke, Louisville etc.) and it will benefit and has benefited us when we've had good recruiters. If Barnes has a renewed interest in recruiting and recruiting this region can be easier than Texas when it comes to basketball then he'll be a great hire.

Of course, he could be spent BUT he should be a good hire for us at the right time. Hell, you don't have to be the best X's and O's coach to win it all, even more than once. You do need the right place at the right time and most importantly the Jimmies and Joes. Plenty of coaches have shown that.

Barnes took your program to as many NCAA tourneys during his 17 years as your program achieved in it's entire history before him.

Did you see the disclaimer at the bottom?

Editors Note: The #8 ranking given to Gregg Marshall was given before all the other coaches were evaluated. we now would rank Gregg Marshall at #17 in the nation.

You also have to go back 50 years prior to Barnes to find as many season where they finished the season ranked as they did in the 17 years Barnes was there coach.

Yes. I think his teams underachieved at tejas at times. But his underachieving teams were the best years tejas has ever seen. It's just not a good basketball school prior to him. He turned nothing into something.

And he actually finished more seasons doing better than people had predicted or thought they would going in than seasons where he finished doing worse than people thought they would going in. So actually, the argument can be made that his teams overachieved as compared to what others perceive of tejas.

Vols are you rich enough to move me and my family to TN and high paying job?

Don't worry bruh I was kidding, my wife wants us to move to Texas but I really want to move to Chattanooga. I thought if I was able to tell her I found a kick arse opportunity I could get her to agree to go....

They were closer to Auburn than Kentucky until Barnes (and Penders to a lesser extent) made them relevant.
