Barnes and Marshall would significantly improve the SEC overall at Tennessee and Alabama respectively

That's a good hire assuming he still wants to coach 5+ more years. Was surprised Texas let him go.

Well, he's certainly a name. I'm susprised Hart didn't hire Knox Carter's coach...they did have a good season.

Probably the latter. Hart said that he was going to use a search firm but the Volquest guys said earlier that it was basically just former AD Doug Dickey helping Hart through the process.

If by "standing around with thumbs up asses" you mean meeting with a top 10 coach and discussing parameters of compensation and basketball program control, then yes. That's exactly what they are doing.
Putting all your eggs in the Marshall basket is gonna blow up in your faces. You'll be way behind in the coaching search after he turns Bama down.

I think it's a solid hire. Barnes needs a fresh start. He was Texas basketball, but the expectations he created for himself were ironically his own bidding 
He should be able to restock Tennessee's roster quickly, which is what they need after so much turnover
