Going by most State fans predictions on here, they didn't meet their expectations. The team didn't meet their own expectations or the coaches expectations either. It does no good for Mullen to sugar coat it.

If he wins 6-7 games next year at any elite SEC school he would be fired. At MSU they are content with a bowl berth and Egg Bowl win.

and we are not an elite SEC school. What's your point?

I think Merlins is a decent coach. Considering the absolute lack of success they've had under Sherrill and Crooms, two consecutive winning seasons is definitely a step in the right direction.

It would have been better if they didn't struggle defensively and offensively (I think losing Manny Diaz was a pretty big loss, and the injuries obviously sucked). If MSU wins 8 next year, I think it's definitely a sign of program elevation IMO.

State's defense actually improved statistically from 2010 to 2011, even after losing Diaz, 3 players to the NFL, and all 3 starting LB's.

In 2010, State had the #50 total defense and #22 scoring defense. In 2011, State was #34 in total defense and #18 in scoring defense.

But I agree with your first sentence (at least as far as Sherrill's last 3 years--Sherrill was fairly successful before his last 3 seasons). Two winning seasons and a row (and likely a third in a row in 2012) is a big improvement over 1 winning season from 2001-2009.

A couple/few more 7- and 8-win seasons, and maybe THEN we can expect more. It would certainly help not having to play 4-5 Top 15 teams every year. That's unusual, even for the SEC.

To lose to the Top 15 teams and still finish with 8 or 9 wins, that means we have to beat EVERY other team on our schedule, both home and away. Although we did that in 2010, we're just not yet in a place to do that consistently.

this. you have to have some consistent average seasons before you can make the next step. Going from 9 to 7 wins is not a big deal when you went from 5 wins to get to nine.

A million LULZ at Dan Mullen calling State a place for recruits to "win championships".

No flame, but I would be embarrassed to hear Petrino say that about Arkansas before winning a SEC title.

If you can get top 20 @ state, you can recruit anywhere. FACT.

Most State fans probably don't like this "championship" bs. I know I think it's a little pathetic. I wish he'd cut that shite out.

Not a bad way to build interest but at some point you have to start winning conference games, or build national interest enough to hire a coach who can. I don't think any fan base will stand for 2-3 conference wins a season for too long. At some point your expectations will grow.

Rogtheshrubber nailed it and most State fans will agree. After the turd of a team Jackie and Croom put on the field the past 7 or 8 years before Mullen came in State fans just wanted to have a winning record and go bowling and thats fine for now. In another couple years expectations will grow and we will have to win conference games for that to happen. Mullen will never be fired as long as he goes bowling every year but eventually 8 and 9 win seasons will be expected but the occasional 6 or 7 win season will be OK. You are gonna take steps back some years.

Your fan base will expect more at some point, which isn't a bad thing. He is building a foundation.

State fans aren't using Rivals this year.

Scout is 16th so we;re going with that one. 24/7 has us at 23 so that's a good site too.

This is teh key. Spurrier has taken how long to get to this point now with USC? He had 3 or 4 years straight of 6-6 seasons after a decent start.

Yeah, LSU isn't in the ESPN top ten and 4th on Rivals.

I agree with you but you have to be realistic as a fan base in reguards to what your team is capable of at the time. State isn't gonna just recruit itself based solely on name like a Bama, USCw, or now I'd put LSU in that same category. My point being that State fans can't come to expect 10 win seasons every year. It's just not going to happen anytime soon. If State can consistantly win 8 or 9 games with an occasional 10 win season and run at the west I think you have to be content with that but at the same time don't jump off any buildings and have a meltdown when you throw in a 6 or 7 win season in with that as well.

I agree. The only reason he beats the Egg Bowl war drum is because most Mississippi State fans eat that shite up.

Mullen doesn't hate Ole Miss, nor does he particularly love State all that much. He's just collecting a paycheck to do a job, just like most coaches in the game today. A lot of SEC fans, ours included, need to realize this.
