Opportunity Vanderbilt helps defray some of the costs of attendance.

I swear Vanderbilt has to be doing something to help finance these kids' tuition outside of their 11.7 baseball scholarships. I just don't see any way this many prospects will turn away millions to take a tuition as high as Vanderbilt's. You might get lucky every once in awhile, but they do this with regularity. now, I get the part about Vanderbilt having a great education to sell, but that education isn't free. I just don't see how Vanderbilt is able to do this with regularity.

It isn't a big secret that the school offers generous financial aid to those who qualify for it.

Auburn has only had two players drafted in the first 35 rounds. We definitely should have one of the better pitching staffs next year given that we had the 3rd or 4th best ERA in the SEC this past year with our best pitcher being out half the year

You're much more likely to get to the majors quicker as someone out of a college so its not like your losing time to start the clock for more money.

Wrong. If you're good enough out of HS, you will in most cases move faster than someone who spends three years in College. In 2011 the Blue Jays drafted Tyler Beede in the 1st round and Daniel Norris in the 2nd round, both top HS pitchers. Beede didn't sign and went to Vanderbilt, whereas Norris signed. As of this year Norris has already made MLB starts, and pitched out of the bullpen last season. He is currently pitching in AAA. Beede on the other hand has just recently been promoted to AA, making only one AA start to date.

Your top College pick is typically going to start their pro career out in A-ball or High A. A HS signee who succeeds is most likely going to be further than that after three seasons (the College kid's NCAA career).

Go back and look at the other top HS picks from that 2011 Draft who ended up signing:

Dylan Bundy: Made MLB, unfortunately blew out elbow
Bubba Starling: Bust, still in AA however
Archie Bradley: Pitching in MLB
Javier Baez: Played 52 MLB games last year, currently in AAA
Francisco Lindor: Made AAA last season, still in AAA this year
Brandon Nimmo: Made AA last season, still in AA this year
Jose Fernandez: Elite MLB starter before blowing out his elbow
Taylor Guerrieri: Only in High A because of blown elbow, would be much higher otherwise
Joe Ross: Made MLB debut this season
Blake Swihart: Made MLB debut this season
Robert Stephenson: Pitching in AA since last season

As you can see, the guys who weren't complete busts are pretty much all ahead of Beede on the developmental path, with many of them already either currently playing in the MLB or having MLB experience under their belt.

Still hard to believe that Frank Thomas is the only SEC guy in the Baseball HOF

That's incredible. I guess Rafael Palmeiro really screwed the pooch on that one. Alvin Dark likely would have made it from LSU had he not served 4 years in the military during WWII. Even without those 4 seasons he still had over 2000 hits. Also won a world championship as manager of the A's.

Outside of maybe Will Clark who would think you be in the HOF?

Is this the first thread in SEC Rant -- or even Internet -- history to seriously discuss the possibility that the Vandy athletic program is engaged in shady recruiting practices? Have we really gone where no man has gone before? If so, in this bitch.

What you are missing is that the kids coming out of high school are paid peanuts unless they make it to the "bigs" and the average college player will get bigger and better contracts as a norm. Sure...they get paid a signing bonus out of high school but then reality sets in with long bus rides, skimpy facilities and average arrangements in living quarters.

Its hard to make it in MLB just as it is in the NFL or NBA etc etc...no one is there to hold your hand and wipe your azz for you...as a result the average high school player will face a lot of uphill struggles and the failure rate is slightly higher most likely.

You know how many football & baseball players are driving beverage trucks, selling insurance or working in a wireless retail center after a few years of pro ball? It is the dream of most football players at major level schools to become pros and the rainbow keeps moving around on them. Its ok to dream and try to pursue it, but backup plans better be in order.

According to Twitter Donny Everett turned down 2.5+ mil from teams to attend Vanderbilt.

I could see turning down 1 million, but 2.5 would be very difficult.
