Mizzou fans, tell me about your defensive line success

Y'all have put out some defensive linemen that are either very successful in college and/or in the NFL yet never seem to sign any of the highly recruited prospects at the positions. I mean, Sheldon Richardson, Kony Ealy, Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, Ziggy Hood and Markus Golden off the top of my head. That's damn impressive.
My question is: how has Mizzou been so successful with d-linemen? Is it better scouting, better development, or a system where the coaches believe they can take any lineman with a certain build and make him successful?

The coaches apparently have certain measurables they look for in their recruits. And then have a successful development process they believe in. Seems to be working. Short answer to your questions: yes.

It's the type of kid the bring in and their ability to develop them.

Well, they got Howard last recruiting cycle and have an underrated kid, IMO, from a kid in-state this cycle that I feel is a stud.
Their OL commit this cycle has a rating of 80 and I see a kid that is better than an 80 rating. I think he is from Webb City.
IMO, the recruiting services don't give the right level of respect for Missouri commits.

I've been impressed with how well every position on the line plays. It seems like the last few years when playing MU their DL has looked like 7th year seniors compared to our young OL.
Their red shirt process is killer

This is important along with astute scouting and a great line coach in Kul. Mizzou has pushed few young players into starting roles along the D-Line. Sheldon Richardson was a really high rated recruit coming out of HS but had to go JC rout. This year will be interesting as they have a great talent coming in with Beckner. Wonder how they handle his PT.

wait? you like our d-line?
I kid, I kid..
Yea Richardson was a 5-star, Ealy a 4 star and TBJ coming in is a 4-5 star. But most are just average looking 2-3 star kids that made the most of the opportunity to work with two of the best position/strength coaches around.
yes it is all that combined. this system has a name, it's called:
"we do what we do".

Great question, this is the thing about Mizzou that is cray cray.

They get a lot of quicker guys... beef em up... and put em where they can succeed with their athleticism.
Credit to the program.

And they generally don't waste time competing with the elite programs for 5* talent within their own state.
They identify the under-tier of players in a state who can develop into 4-5* talent (that haven't popped up on the national radar) and recruit them. That's why you'll see a Mizzou player's offer sheet as Bowling Green, Middle Tennessee State and Missouri.
Only later do the big boys try to poach them after some of their 5* went elsewhere.

Mizzou has the advantage of not having a tremendous amount of staff turnover. As a result everyone is pretty much on the same page when it comes to team development. They know what athletes to look for, how to work them into the system they favor, and how to use them to the best of their ability come game time.
Good coaching, good scouting, and good continuity will win you a lot of games.

That's another good point. It'll be interesting to see how Pinkel manages the defections that are sure to come and the final transition when he ultimately retires 5-10 years from now.
I think Pinkel will know what's best when the time comes. I just hope our new AD doesn't try to put his stamp on a football program that's been a well-oiled machine.

My guess is that Pinkel hangs it up closer to five years rather then ten. He has outside interests, he's getting to that age where a coach generally tends to start to decline, and he seems like the sort of guy who would rather gracefully exit then linger on and be a burden.
Which reminds me of another thing I should have added to why Mizzou has success with their line play. A team tends to take on the personality of their Head Coach. Pinkel has always had a sort of blue collar outlook and his team reflects that. They will just outwork you.

What are these outside interests you speak of?
He seems like a football first kind of guy to me, in good shape for his age, and enjoying his job. He may not last 10 years due to his age but I'd expect him to stick around as long as he can to keep building the program and enjoy the success.

Pinkel seems in a good place to me. I can see him coaching for longer than 5 years, but not much more. Unlike a lot of coaches he does a good job of delegating and works ample time off in for himself and his coaches. I don't see him burning out, but I also don't see him holding out too long. I can see a transition to Odom if he doesn't get a HC job elsewhere first.

Others have pretty much covered most of the salient issues.
I'd add Pat Ivey.
