Neil Price formerly at Kentucky was officially hired today As the play by play guy for Mississippi State football and basketball. He replaces long time MSI broadcaster Jim Ellis who is retiring.

I listened to some of his calls on his website and he sounds like a grizzled veteran to be as young as he is. Looking forward to his first call this fall when we open our season.

I sure wish Jack had gotten to enjoy the 2014 football season.

Jack was one of a kind and I think about him every time I go into my office. I have a signed copy of his book on book shelf

How thick is his skin? You gotta have an extra layer of bark on the tree to endure season after season of MSU sports

Always loved driving down for a night game at TS and hitting Meridian around 11 or so for a State early game with Jack. Loved his description of State's uniforms. Classic.

My favorite Jack call ever. He loved MSU and hated to see them so bad. During the Croom years when it was horrible, we had gotten beaten down by Auburn.
At the end of the game, he announced the "Sonic Drive of the Game" would be his damn drive back to his home in Tupelo.
Jack was also an avid smoker. At a basketball game I watched a man bring his young son to meet Jack during halftime. Jack did his song and dance and the man said "We love you Jack and we want to see you live. You need to stop smoking."
Jack said as calm as he could "My daddy lived until he was 95 years old." The man said "Did he smoke?" Jack responded "No, he minded his own damn business."

I am serious. I always was worried that Kentucky would lose Neil to a MLB play by play gig. He is that good. He made listening to UK Baseball games an enjoyable experience. Was great setting the scenario and is knowable and does his homework. Y'all should enjoy him.

His go-to response was always "I told my doc that I'd quit smoking when he did"

Jack definitely called it like he saw it.

I know vintage radio tapes, etc aren't as readily available as they once were. I know Georgia has some of "Munson's Best Calls" -- or similar. Does State offer anything in way of Cristol's calls?

Jack: They have it on the Bulldog 35. They being the Auburn Tigers. It being the football.

Back in the 70s, we were playing Alabama in Jackson and they skunked us 35-0 or so. End of game wrap up, Jack said, "well, I guess Alabama will go back to Tuscaloosa and work on the one illegal procedure penalty they had."
