Why do some MSU fans act/think they are a traditional power in baseball. They have never won a national championship and are not top 10 in CWS appearances or wins. They have 9 CWS appearances, 1 appearance in final, and no championships.

In the SEC, I would put them behind LSU (obviously), South Carolina (11 appearances, 4 trips to finals, and 2 ships) and Florida (9 trips, 2 finals).

And yes, Msu is better than Bama in baseball and they have a good track record. But their record doesn't reconcile with some of their fans belief that they are a blue blood.

Well, its the only big 3 sport they can hang their hat on in any way.

Pretty numb to a typical Alabama loss under Mitch Gaspard. State and Florida may have put the final nails in Gaspard's coffin.

I'm not one who believes our baseball team is some sort of powerhouse. We have a decent program, but we just won our first title since '89.

State did contribute heavily to the rise of college baseball in the SEC. Those teams in the 80s, those trips to Omaha, the facility improvements, it made the rest of the SEC interested in baseball. They can be credited for that.

They are good and have a nice tradition, but are not in the elite.

I wouldn't say we're a powerhouse, but we paved the way for college baseball in the SEC. Combine that with some of the greatest college players to ever play, the best fan support in the country, and an atmosphere that can't be touched and you get a very solid program.

Just curious, who are the elite teams in your opinion?

Very subjective list, but I couldn't call anyone elite nationally with no national championships and outside the top 10 in CWS appearances and wins. Off the top of my head, I would call LSU, Miami, southern cal, Texas, cal state Fullerton and Arizona state.

LSU & USC have better programs but we are close to Florida. They have 13 SEC championships, we have 17. I think we are a top 20ish program but not close to LSU.

It'll help if we ever actually win a NC & build a new stadium. It doesn't hurt that we own 14 of the top 17 attendance records in the country.

They had Palmiero and Clark at the same time. One of those iconic teams. Pile that on top of the most wins in the conference all time and that's where it comes from. I don't think any of their fans think they are a championship program or anything like that, but no one can take away from them that Ron Polk might be the most influential baseball personality in the conference all time.

You completely missed the postseason more times than you made the World Series in the 80's and won the SEC three times in 10 years. It wasn't like you were the only team.

I know you guys had some big names like Palmeiro and made a couple post season runs, but it has been overblown and romanticized throughout the years.

ETA:

Polk was great for SEC baseball though, no doubt.

Sounds like Arkansas. They love to talk about how many people come to Baum.

This and the other similar post sum it up. I think it chaps some of the other programs that Polk and State were the ones who broke the ground for what modern day college baseball is today. We've been able to be a good program but should have a championship by now. Even with a championship I wouldn't call our program elite by any stretch.

I think he may be second behind Bertman. Maybe that's just me being a homer.

Alabama has more regular season SEC titles than MSU, and an equal amount of tourney titles.
