I understand. I was probably too harsh. I apologize.

Of course it matters too. But there is something wrong when the death of a chimp or a lion or a tiger can rise our emotions to a boil, but the yearly deaths of 7.6 million people becomes business as usual.
My Mom battled breast cancer 5 years ago, so far so good. I feel for you man because I know the emotions that go with cancer. As for the animals, I just think it's natural for folks to feel emotion for them because we feel like we know them personally. We see them, read about them and in Mike's case, understand how many people he makes happy on a daily basis.
God bless.

I think this is the key. Most of us have a big enough heart to care for many things at once and the ability to prioritize the things that are most valuable which obviously means human life is most precious. But realizing that fact, doesn't mean we can't care for other things.

That's kind of my point. The fact that the death of a chimp or lion or tiger causes such deep emotion in so many people, and yet the yearly death of 7.6 million people to cancer is just a number, demonstrates that something is wrong with our priorities. That was my point, even if this was probably the wrong thread to try and make that point. I still think it's true.

Edit: Maybe this came across as too harsh. I just don't understand why the tragic deaths of chimps and tigers can get so much national attention, but the everyday death of tens of thousands of people from cancer so easily becomes so emotionally mundane.
Thoughts and Prayers to you and your family.

I'm sorry she is going through this Hugh. My prayers are with you guys.
I understand what you are saying. It should be noted that over many, many years, LSU's live tiger mascots have brought countless smiles and joy to children and adults alike- some of whom were not in the best of health, themselves. I totally get that he's just a big cat to some. But to a vast amount of people, he's a lot like family and part of a much bigger tradition.
My prayers are with you and your wife, man. May she have a speedy, full recovery and enjoy many, many happy years ahead!

Sorry to make this about my wife, but I don't apologize for making it about the thousands of people who die of cancer every day.
Sorry about Mike. He's an amazing animal.

He would do it often, esp if a visitor would crunch down and turn his back toward Mike

No apologies needed, man. Many of us have been there, as well. Hang tough.

Lost my mom to breast cancer. I am sorry for the pain your wife and family are going through.
Her being on chemo, have they narrowed down they type she has?

its fine cancer is a very hard thing to go through, ive only known 3 people personially who went through it and actually witness its horror. 2 of the 3 isn't here with us anymore my grandmother who passed away from lung cancer that developed after 40 years without smoking. my stepdad who died of lung cancer also, agent orange related, from vietman. and my next door neighbor,my best friends mom, who beat breast cancer. my prayers goes out to you, and your wife. But with seeing people waste away(literally) anything that gets cancer, I feel for it.

I don't disagree with you. Very often people can be shallow or simply blind to what's going on in the world while others simply don't care about their fellow human beings (some find it easier to sympathize with an animal simply because they've got no heart for their fellow human beings - that's wrong and it angers me when I see us forgetting about our fellow human but that's the situation I think you're describing).

Mike's cancer did "go away" but according to the press release the tumor in his brain has not only returned, the cancer has spread. An official PC later this morning but it does not sound good. It's fun to go out to his cage on a nice Sunday afternoon & watch him romp around or just lay in the shade. Either situation, watching him, you come to realize he really is just a cat, same mannerisms, walk, the way he gets up/lays down. And yet he's this huge, incredibly fast cat. And kids love him. Though there are signs all around his cage bout not bring pets..dogs in particular seem to be a favorite.. people still bring them out to his cage & when Mike spots one of them....ding ding ding SUPPER TIME! You can see his eyes actually light up.

I'm sorry you lost your mom. My wife is pretty young. Luckily, her cancer is Hormone positive, and her oncotype is pretty low. There is good reason for us to be optimistic. I have a great friend from high school, with young kids at home, whose cancer has already moved into her bones. It's so sad.

I couldn't agree more but that is not the issue at hand. I believe you're talking about Harambe, but that is comparing apples to oranges.
