Cam could have done this early in his career, he had more weapons at WR his rookie and 2nd year. Play calling killed those years.

My recollection is that Shula was always a good QB coach and a decent play caller. He just couldn't run a team and couldn't figure out how to win close games.

I remember the word around the NFL when we hired Shula was that he was a career assistant. Just didn't have the mentality to be a HC and honestly probably didn't have the desire to be one either.
After following him at UA for 4 years, that assessment was probably true.

Of course he'll probably parlay this success with Cam into one more shot as a HC.

Shula still has work to do. Cam still isn't a 60% passer. It's amazing what he's been able to accomplish without the accuracy and touch of an elite QB.

Not sure about that. Alot of those plays were:
A. Cam making a fantastic throw
B. An athlete making a great play
C. Cam making the correct read.

Yes, Shula helps install the plays, system, etc but Carolina has exceptional players and the best QB I've ever seen with the whole package.

When Cam was at Auburn I remarked that he was the best I'd ever seen. 250 pounds with moves like Johnny Rodgers. An arm with Marino strength and the accuracy of Montana. Never seen anything like him to be honest. Football is usually not a one man show but sometimes generational players come through, Walker, Jackson, Barry Sanders, John Elway who can carry a team on their back. He has more ability to do that than any player I've ever seen.

Accuracy, are you fricking crazy. Cam threw some passes this year that no other QB in the game could have completed.

I disagree. Cam, like a lot of truly elite athletes, tried to rely on his individual athletic ability far to quickly early in his career. It didn't work as well as it did in college because well, it is the NFL. Everyone is a truly elite athlete.

To Cam's great credit, he learned from the experience. Vick never did. RG 3 hasn't, and it looks like JFF might not either.

He was 28th in the league in completion percentage this year, one spot above Ryan Fitzpatrick. Just saying it's one thing he can improve on. How does Kirk Cousins complete 70% and Cam completes just under 60%?

Because theyre in different offenses?... the Redskins had training wheels on cousins for much of the year... meanwhile Carolina stretches teams vertically better than just about any other team in the league.

As a pure passer, I don't think anyone will argue he's a top 5 QB... but as a total package, he's almost unstoppable.

Their yards per attempt are almost identical, 7.75 to 7.67. Cam just doesn't know how to not throw a rocket. He'll take the next step as a passer once he learns to put a little touch on his passes to make them more catchable.

Cam is like Favre in that instance...when God gave you that arm you are going to throw into places the mere mortals don't try from time to time every once in a while you might make a mistake. He also throws the ball on the run more than most QB's because he keeps plays alive with his feet.

Shula figured out how to use Cam when his butt was about to get canned last season. I am happy for him. I have always liked Shula, but most of Cam's issues which he was still al 2nd tier elite NFL QB were caused by Shula. Freeing up Cam allowed him to step into the next tier. A blind monkey can see his athletic skills are his best friend so longevity might not be Cam's story, but he is special in a way we have never seen at QB.

Shula is a good coach.

Of course, it helps having a quarterback with the talent that Cam Newton has.

Remember, he went undefeated in the SEC his one year as a starter. That is no easy task.

I wonder if he is content being an OC? I hope so, he always seemed like a good guy and I hope he is happy where he is now. He guided Alabama through a very rough time.

Not saying to this level, but remember his first two games he threw for over 400 yards in each game. He was surrounded by better talent at both WR and RB his first two years. Cam has improved in the pocket, but he still has a lot of passes dropped by their WRs.
