From what I remember, the sports shows said (the morning after he was hired) "it's not a matter of if, but when Saban wins a NC."

Maybe some of the less intelligent people focused on his salary, but I recall the general consensus being "oh shite."

99% of the criticism was directed at Saban for his denial about being the next Alabama head coach. It completely changed the way coaches address these questions. Nowadays coaches just ignore the questions altogether and say something to the effect of "I'm happy with where I'm at." Nobody ever issues a flat denial anymore.

Also remember the media and fans making a big deal about Coach Saban having no buyout clause. Looks like Saban and Alabama were way ahead of the curve on that one. How much money have programs like Auburn and Tennessee had to pay out to fire shitty coaches? Buyouts are wrecking athletic departments these days.

"Pawlllllllll, Saban ain't got no buyout he is going to leave after 2 years!!!"

I remember, I said it myself.

I made fun of the fact that y'all were paying him more than any other HC in the sport at the time.

I laughed at the idea that he had numeric restrictions on the number of times he would be required to participate with the public written into his contract.

I thought the one-way buyout clause had the potential to bite you in the arse.

I fully expected him to bolt after four or five seasons when he failed to live up to your ridiculous expectations.

I was wrong.

Admit I thought it showed how desperate Bama is to win football games. Turns out to have been the most wisely invested $$ in athletics. It would cost Bama $100M to get the marketing Saban provides. I think UGA finally wised up to the whole "football is marketing" idea.

i remember the onslaught of "hes just a mercenary" a few years and hes gone. sheesh, even talking heads on the formerly non political espn talked about him only staying long enough to win a 'ship and then bolting on to another challenge. because saban has to have new challenges. this forum was almost unbearable with all the negativity towards saban and bama.

but now we celebrate mr n mrs sabans 11 year at the capstone. another year with a 'ship in clear sight. while the junkyard formerly known as the sec, hopes n prays he retires soon. so that those mediocre coaches theyve spent a ton of money on can get past the learning curve.

When you factor in the money that's being spent to give players brand new sports cars, it's much higher than $4 million.

I was wrong.

After comments made to LSU and Miami fanbases which turned sideways on him, he came off as Petrino ish.

Unfortunately for my Falcons, we got the real Petrino.
