The A&M website numbers show faculty and staff--not all outsources, contracts, grantees, etc. in all 254 Texas counties.
I'm not in the least bit interested in how many we employ or who employs "the most."
We're one of the nation's top five largest universities--it stands to reason that we employ tens of thousands of people.
Just posting the public numbers, that's all.

There is no way this is accurate. I mean, not even in the ballpark of close to accurate. It wants to tell me that Fort Benning employs more people than Coke, Lockheed, or AT&T? No shot.

Depends on what you do for them.

Their pay on the corporate level is very competitive for all positions.

Their non-skilled labor is payed like other non-skilled labor.

Tyson is probably worse as far as pay for skill goes than Walmart.

My first thought was that they are including the agencies (Ag Experiment, Ag Extension, etc) which are statewide (all 254 counties), but then those may not be directly under the purview of the University President - e.g. might be governed directly under the Chancellor.

I'm sort of shocked that the State of Texas is not the largest employer, even in a reflexively anti-government state like Texas. Not surprised Shell was #2 on your list though.

It's not even close to being accurate. Redstone Arsenal is the largest employer in Alabama. UAB is next.

Well the corporate headquarters is in Arkansas so I'm not sure what's funny about it. It would be pretty odd for the #1 Fortune 500 company to not be the top employer in a state the size of Arkansas.

I'm not sure that they are, because of the criteria not being clear for the "map".

Tyson would be challenging Wal-mart in employee size due to their HC being instate, all the processing plants in state, drivers for Tyson, plus all the farmers who grow for Tyson in the state.

There's no way this is correct. I know UAB has to be near the top. Redstone Arsenal as well.

Interesting. Every state's main employer pays a livable wage except one.

I worked for walmart and they treat people terrible. I worked my way up to manager only to be cut to 20 hours a week in the slower seasons which wasn't enough to live off of.

Only time I was ever allowed overtime was when they shipped several of us to a store in dallas that was fire damaged. Reason they shipped us in was because the workers in dallas made 3 time as much money so walmart shipped in cheap labor from out of state

The better comparison would be for the associates wage compared to other equally skilled labor in the market, that would lead to jobs offered in the fast food and other retail industries, all of which hover around min wage. The pay of store managers is hirer than that of those with a similar workforces at the store level, IIRC. The jobs at the HC pay very well as does the jobs that require an actual skill or trade.

i worked there in college for awhile and had no issues whatsoever but i was pretty much working for spending money and that was it. i'm surprised they cut a manager to 20 hours? i can imagine that would be impossible to live on.

The salary employees is what I was talking about in the above.

A salaried store manager at Walmart will make more than a salaried manager at McDonalds, for example.

The non-skilled labor running the cash register are payed basically the same within a few cents an hour, even tho they think they are entitled to be payed more per/hr than the skilled technicians who made the cash register work...

Redstone only gets a portion of who all works on the Arsenal. A lot of the folks that work out here are contractors. Those numbers aren't given to RSA, they go to the companies that the employees work for.

MGM Grand isn't the largest employer in Nevada, its MGM-Mirage Resorts, which is a conglomerate that owns a lot of casino-resort properties in Nevada and Worldwide.
