Mason is the man, love watching him, but pretty much any running back is gonna put up stats like his with the way they use him and how many touches they get. I guarantee whoever runs the ball for Auburn this year will replicate Mason's stats.

I doubt that, but he'll be productive, agreed.

All plays use "trickery".

One of the best plays near the goal line that Bama ran to beat AU in 2009 was the pass to a FB off play action. We bit, the "trickery" worked.

In 2013, when Bama had 4th and 1, I really thought they would play action. They chose to run up the middle. If I had AJ as my QB I would put the game in his hands, but they made a different choice.

What Gus does is run plays that have several option off the same look. He really prefers to run the ball if there are 6 or less in the box. Gus also likes to go fast if we are near hash with a first down. Most of his pass plays are play action.

At the end of the day, you still have to have athletes execute whatever the play is, whatever the system is, and understand the terminology and the reads

Lemme get this thread started..

Thank goodness!

Marshall would absolutely suck at most any school who doesn't run the type of offense that Auburn does.

I might disagree that he would suck, but my point is he does run that offense. And the offense fits his talents, just as Florida's offense fit Tebows talents and Alabama's offense fit McCarron's talents...and A&M's offense fit Manziel's talents.

I guess my point is that Malzahn is being criticized for doing what an offensive coordinator is supposed to do. Fit an offense around the talents of his players. I just don't understand the hate directed towards him for doing a good job.

This, and while I hate to see South Carolina and Georgia playing against it in the same year, I do love watching it.

I think the only way to stop it is with two fast defensive ends and good spur linebacker with about 4.6 speed. Kind of the way Julius Peppers shut down Clemson's offense with Dantzler.

I understand this. but you don't see the same type of derision towards Sumlin, for instance, and he has been pretty successful. Granted not as successful as some on the board would like, but he's had a couple of pretty good years.

I THINK it is because it is the HUNH and it is relatively new. That is why I talked about the wishbone, veer etc. They were all new at one time and thought to be relatively gimmicky.

I just don't think Malzahn gets the credit he deserves.

And no, I am not sucking up to Auburn...just trying to be fair and honest.

There are many ways to stop it, but they all revolve around winning the LOS. Look what FSU did in the second half. They really took control of the LOS and really hurt our offense.

AJ and JM would be successful at pretty much any college in the country. Marshall sucks at QB, but can run Auburn's system. This is a topic for another thread, but I really fricking hope the QB position doesn't fully involve into what it looks like it's headed for.

Agreed. Fun to watch it being played against other teams. Seems like it can be stopped, but it's a bit more of a challenge to stop than it initially seems.

It is because he is at Auburn. The Cam Newton saga changed everything with regards to Auburn. We joke about people being Aubsessed and what not, but after 2010, people love seeing bad news about Auburn. There is a reason that the Marshall citation was still at the top of espn the same day as Lebron's announcement. If Auburn is succeeding, there is an effort to discredit it. People don't give it credit because they don't want it to work.

People criticizing him are morons. He's an awesome coach and I'd bet he could coach any style and be successful.

I do hate the hurry up though.

I mean why all the derision towards his offense?

Because it ruins what people thought football was.

People thought football was two brilliant minds who would play a game of chess after every snap with the pieces they recruited.

Gus's style of offense makes the game less about how badass of a Xs and Os guy your coach is and more about how in condition your team is and how well they know your system.

Which honestly I much prefer to the old chess style of football. Saban showed the world the chess style of football can get really boring if one coach is the Michael Jordan of football coaching. With the HUNH, it doesn't matter how smart Saban is, he is only as good as the condition of talent he has on the field.

Not many, but I would say that is the way people are trying to get the QB position to go towards.
