Tennessee doesn't have the same access to talent and will require nationwide recruiting and a great coach to keep pace with their own history. They're similar to Notre Dame, Nebraska is a more extreme example

Weren't impressed by the SEC Championships in the 80s?

Texas has four other P5 schools (to say nothing of 11 other FBS schools) with which it has to compete; Tennessee only has Vandy.

LSU is a unique case. They're alone in a talent rich state that should have have operated at a higher level from integration until the late 90s than they did based on that alone. Due to unique circumstances (being in a conference with Bryant, a string of bad coaching hires) it didn't happen, but now that the potential is reached and their national profile raised I would argue their floor has been raised. It's similar to the untapped potential of the Florida schools pre Spurrier and Bowden, they will never go back to consistent mediocrity and lowest lows that existed before them. It's just not rea

You make some good points. However, I'm not sure the ceiling was really as high in the past as it is now. LSU was a consistently good program from the late 50s to the late 80s, they just weren't great very often. Other than Dietzel, a couple of seasons under Cholly Mac, and Arnsparger's brief tenure, there were a lot of bowls, but not a lot of titles. But, even with the 90s being an anchor, LSU still ranked among the top 25 winningest programs in college football when Saban took the job.

Also, remember that LSU didn't always have the state completely to itself. From the 50s to the 70s, Tulane actually had a pulse and would jump up and beat us from time to time. The huge difference between the conferences didn't become extreme until the TV money really started flowing in the 80s.

54-58 during the 90's. By the far the worst in our history.

However, we won 27 games from 1995-1997 and three straight bowl wins.

You're very wrong about New Orleans. The 8 parish metro NOLA population is 1.2 million. There are a huge number of LSU fans and alumni in the GNO metro area. The city itself is only 1/3 of that population.

Uh, yes.

Because I guess to YOUUUUUUUUUUUU, 'mediocrity' somehow magically means:

Golf: 3rd place in 2016 NCAA Finals and defending 2015 National Champions.

Track and Field: Men ranked 3rd and Women 8th, annually NC contenders.

Gymnastics: Ranked #2 final National ranking, annual NC contenders.

Softball: WCWS 3 of last 4 years.
3rd place finish in 2016.

Lacrosse and Rugby 2016 Top 5
and national finalists.

Baseball: 2016 Super Regionals. History speaks for itself. 16 CWS and 6 NCs.

Football: has averaged 10 wins a year since 2000. Only team in country to have 16 consecutive winning seasons and bowl apps, AND 18 of the last 20 seasons.

Basketball trying to regain form of 2000s, when the Ladies went to 5 straight Final Fours and the Men went to 2 Sweet 16s and a Final Four.

Yeah, thst's just plain mediocre.

It's amazing how Brett Farve made a mediocre highschool coach look like a world-beater, and Curly shouldn't be compared to Dinardo. Dinardo was actually a halfway decent coach and vastly improved the shite show that he was left with.

I was one of the million or so people in the student section for Florida in '97 , and it was amazing. Dinardo left a full deck for Saban who promptly parlayed it into a championship.

I generally agree, however, Tennessee is a good case study on this matter. A Top 10 program like UT dropping so low just seems so improbable. Hopefully we will not see lows like this for a long time. I enjoy our just inside the Top 10 status.

Personally, I'd consider Tennessee more probable than most bluebloods. Weak in-state recruiting and stiff competition for recruits in neighboring states makes their position somewhat precarious. The fact that they have one of the best pedigrees in the SEC is a tribute to some excellent coaching.
