Godchaux looked very good. Hard to say on the other dts since half didn't play. If they step up we will be much better than last year. Improved at every position if someone replaces Ego. Imo.

After Gordon's big run to start the 3rd quarter, they had 32 yards on 13 carries to finish the game.

D-Line was really bad in the first half of the game. Danielle Hunter had a particularly horrible first half but I expect him to improve. I thought Rasco played well. Lacatour is overrated and was getting pushed back almost every play. The linebackers made mental mistakes and were out of position often, and Welter just doesn't have what it takes to be an SEC MLB. The defensive backs are outstanding. Across the board we have tons of size, speed, and talent but we need to cut down on mental mistakes and getting caught out of position. Our D-line needs to toughen up. And Chavis needs to not call stunts that get our defense out of position, I think we are good enough to have success with a basic defense. Finally, we need one or more players to step up and be special on the defense..right now I'm thinking Jalen Mills will take that role.

We are equal with last year's defense right now but eventually we will be better.

Valentine will be cleared soon hopefully and will make an immediate impact on obvious running plays. Bain comes back. Herron will be back. QT will continue to heal to 100%. That's not our normal DL we saw against Wisconsin.. so I'm not too worried about it.

Yes the defense settled down in the 2nd half. Alexander was more aggressive and played down hill more. 57 Godchuax held up and gave LSU some needed help we played QT,Laqcoutre and bowers came in some too and he is a DE. We will be fine with more games played and players coming back. MG and McEvoy was a handful at first but we figured them out.

About the same.

DL is average at best and capable of being truly awful at times. There are no standouts on our entire DL and not one player that opposing teams will have to scheme around. Rasco is okay, Hunter is unremarkable (no burst off line, cannot seem to use arms effectively but they look great), LaCouture is average, Thomas is a non-factor, Gilmore, Bain, Neal, and Herron are not ready for prime time, Johnson and Maclin are done, Bower is unremarkable, Godchaux shows flashes of promise but is very green. I'll let the stats speak for themselves: our DTs combined for 5 tackles, 0 TFL, 0 sacks, 0 hurries. Our DEs combined for 12 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 0 sacks, 0 hurries.

LBs are okay at best. Alexander is the only player capable of causing some problems; he is an above average player. If an offensive player makes contact with Welter he is out of the play, period; Welter cannot shed or avoid a block to save his life. Louis has fight and heart but struggles to make an impact. Beckwith, Riley, and Jones have yet to show out thought they have been playing for over a year now, two years in Jones' case.

DBs are good. White and Robinson are physical and fast with skills. Both are two of the better CBs in the SEC. Collins seems to have elevated his game; he played very well against Wisconsin and has the size and speed to be a factor. Mills has always been a good player and really seems to be playing with some fire right now. Martin is average on his best days. Thomas is flashing some skills.

This is a very blue collar defense that will play well as a unit/committee if it is successful. There are no stars. There is no Glenn Dorsey, no Tyson Jackson, no Kevin Minter, no Kelvin Sheppard, no Patrick Peterson, no Tyrann Mathieu, no Morris Claiborne, no Eric Reid, no Michael Brockers, no Kiki Mingo, no Sam Montgomery. It is a very average cast.

Secondary is great. And we didn't have RR.

Kwon is our best player on D. Period. He is a really really good LB. Welter still sucks. Beckwith can hold his ground in the middle way better than Welter, but the staff has a hard on for Welter and nobody understands it. All the "he knows the D" is a bunch of crap. Kwon is a 3 year starter. He knows the D.

Rasco looked good last night. I wasn't overly impressed with him last year, but I was impressed with him last night. Hunter is all bark with some bite, but not a lot. Has trouble dissecting some plays and he bites on fakes a good bit and gets turned around. But when he sees it happen, he makes the play and looks like nobody can stop him. I love his hustle and pursuit because he makes a lot of plays chasing down RBs laterally. But needs to be more consistent with his reads. Once he gets it all down, and I expect him to, he's gonna be a stud. Still a good player with the potential to be a great player and is just scratching the surface of his potential... Can't say that for a lot of guys. He has tremendous upside. And thinks he gets there or damn near it.

Our 2 best DTs might be a true freshman(Godchaux) and a RSFreshman that didn't play due to suspension (Bain). I was impressed with Godchaux #57. Held his own against a very experienced and disciplined Wisky OL. Sure he made some mistakes and what not, but he jumped off the TV and has obvious talent. Dude is a true freshman coming off ACL surgery and 300lbs but is built like a brick house and has very little fat on him. He's gonna be a monster. Was a DE in high school and has that athleticism. And Bain is an outstanding athlete as well. 6'4 310lbs and can dunk. That's ridiculous. We missed him. He was my breakout player for this season and still think he will be.

Secondary is our consistent group this year, along with Kwon. But I think our front 7, especially DTs, improve as the season goes on and young guys gain experience. We are most def a young team, but it's also a very talented young team. My hey will get better each week.

When it's all said and done, yes I think they will be better than last years group. Pretty much same team with more experience. Oh and Wisky is legit. Anyone in the SEC would struggle against Melvin Gordon running the ball. He's as good as advertised, most likely better.

hard to say, because bain, heron and robinson didn't play. if those guy's aren't suspended, for the whole season, this defense could be very good.

Herron wasn't suspended. Godchaux jumped him and got the snaps over him.

Bain and RR were.

He might not have been suspended but I heard he was held out for a team rule infraction

Then why wasn't he suspended like Bain and RR?

Being held out for a team rule infraction = suspended IMO.

Odd to suspend RR and Bain for breaking a team rule, but allow Herron to travel and dress when he broke a team rule. If that's the case.

Just a lot of weird stuff with players and suspensions and availability the day before the game.

His infraction was not as serious as the other ones. Some might even say justified

We don't even know what Bain and RR did... Sure we can speculate but nobody knows the facts.

But, if his infractions weren't as serious, why was he withheld from the entire game? Basically suspended the entire game...

that's not true, herron was held out for some reason. DG played great, don't get me wrong, but Herron should have played in the rotation. For example, there is no way Neal would have played as much as he did, in the second qt, had herron been able to play.

Les played QT who was not a 100%. I am sure Herron would have played if he could have

people need to stop with the "why didn't they keep handing off to Gordon." when they tried to run, lsu shut it down

Defense is much improved. Wisconsin has a great running game. LSU defense took over in the 2nd half. Last year, this game would have been a high scoring back and forth game cause our defense couldn't stop anything last year, especially in the first half of the season.

Noticed a lot of young guys but they stepped it up the second half.

Two key players did not play, first game of season, moments of extremely good play, moments of very poor play. No one who really understands the game can say at this point, but hopeful for improvement vs. last years piss poor showing.
