SB Nation

The completion of the 2016 college football season gave me 12 full years of play-by-play data (2005-16) to use for my S&P+ ratings. The number of teams in FBS has varied throughout that time period, but ranking among the top 55 has always assured a spot in the upper half of the rankings.

Twelve teams have ranked in said upper half in all 12 seasons:

Boise State (best: first in 2010, worst: 54th in 2005)
BYU (best: ninth in 2006; worst: No. 54th in 2011)
Clemson (best: second in 2015 and 2016; worst: 41st in 2011)
Florida (best: first in 2006 and 2009; worst: 33rd in 2011 and 2013)
Florida State (best: first in 2013; worst: 50th in 2008)
LSU (best: first in 2011; worst: 24th in 2008)
Ohio State (best: first in 2014; worst: 35th in 2011)
Oklahoma (best: first in 2008; worst: 27th in 2013)
Penn State (best: fourth in 2005; worst: 52nd in 2013)
TCU (best: fifth in 2009; worst: 50th in 2013)
USC (best: first in 2005; worst: 34th in 2009)
Wisconsin (best: 10th in 2009 and 2011; worst: 42nd in 2006)

So why'd you fire Les then?

They think their program is on par with Alabama's for some reason.

When you're used to 1-10, 15-25 isn't quite as sweet

And you had to can the coach that brought LSU all of this success.

Kinda sad that Les couldn't find a way to evolve with the times.

Your list is suspect if these two are included

Now that TCU is ensconced in a P5 it will be interesting to see what their long term success will be

And they promoted their D-Line coach to head coach expecting better results.

Les was incapable of relinquishing control of the offense, his ego just wouldn't allow him to let his OC do his job. I honestly think he have every intention of changing/tweaking the offense after the red hot seat he sat on after the 2015 season. He just couldn't evolve.

I would say he just flat out lied that he was going to. Because seriously, that was the same offense we saw in 2016 under him we saw the previous several years.

The guy just was so stubborn in his ways, he really thought he could win with HIS offense when it was crystal clear his offense not only stunted QB development, it was way too easy to defend against from a predictability standpoint. I even remember when he used to be called the Riverboat gambler, and even in his waning years it's hard to recall many trick plays or OH WOW moments.

Fake news anyway. LSU wasn't ranked in any major poll at the end of 2008.

Yeah you're a bit off

From 2001-2011 - Finished Top 10 7 times in 11 seasons, 6 in 9 seasons from 2003-2011
From 2012-2016 - Finished Top 10 0 times in 5 seasons

Almost too easy to see the trend there
