its weird, but until I read this post ive never really considered the idea that LSU was elite. I don't know, maybe it because my team has kicked their arse almost as much as they have kicked ours over the past decade. needless to say, my team is not elite. and ive always been amused at how lsu fans adamantly deny Ole Miss as their rival, yet when I went to the lsu-arizona game in Tucson about 10 years ago, there was a GO TO HELL OLE MISS sign displayed prominently in the visitors section. I giggled.

You shouldn't be. Any fan that understands the historical nature of our relationship knows we are rivals. But yeah, Ole Miss has not been elite since the year I was born. LSU has a chance but we cannot put it together.

This is the truth. They know that the money will be flowing in anyway.

Word bro. You hit the mother lode. No getting around it. Kind of makes me wonder what it would have took to keep him from going to Miami. I will be the first to admit, our AD historically has not had the ability to nail down that big name. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

If they weren't putting talent in the NFL like they are I might agree with you. But, they still have the most NFL players in the league and continue to put them out like a factory. It just takes the right coach and they will be competing for Championships with us in no time.

The thing is though, is that once Saban is gone, you will be back to a mediocre program as well. Everything has cycles.

Talk now, lose later. Its how it works.

When were they ever truly elite? Very good to great, yes.
Look, I consider winning 2 national titles, playing for a third, and winning 4 SEC titles in 10 years elite.

If that isnt elite, then frick me

Not sure about the mediocre program thing because I believe that won't be true. They will drop off surly, but will still be at the "elite" status of us

It will be damn near impossible to follow Saban. Whoever gets the gig will almost be in a no win situation.

While I don't disagree with the rest of your post, this is the benchmark? Only 4 other teams outside of Bama have won a NC since our last - and each of those did so only once.

If not for the recruiting and the NFL stars, you may be right. But those facts give us hope that we are just the right coaching staff away from being elite again. All the other pieces are in place.

So we'll find our next NC winning coach 5-10 years later? I'll take that.

You know, since that has been our cycles since 1920.

LSU is an elite program. LSU is not however, an elite football team. It is a team that has spent nearly a decade without an offensive identity and excellent qb play. That is a failure of the head coach, and the reason why LSU has had the tumult of the last year.

Shovel shite on LSU at your leisure though. Knock yourself out. As long as you are obsessed with LSU, we know who worries you.

Your post is too long.

Our mum and dad fans carried Les off the field after beating A&M to cap off a mediocre year last year.

That's all you need to know.

When the results and talent disappear from the program is when you lose any claim to elite status.

LSU has lost 1 major defining block(results) but just like Miami before they came crashing down we are still producing the other(talent). As long as LSU can recruit and produce NFL players the program will stay relevant enough to have a chance to be able to position themselves where they ultimately want to be.

I wouldn't say that LSU is not an elite program anymore. I think we have a program in transition if that makes sense. Programs that arent elite don't recruit like LSU does. Miami was an elite program, but they are not now because of the level of players they are acquiring. We need a coach. Alabama is blessed to have the best coach in america right now. Every program goes through it. With the right hires, LSU can compete for champiosnships again. Tennessee, Texas, USC, I consider these programs still elite, but they need a coach. With the right hire the results will be seen on the field. Considering we hired coach O, the jury is still out to see how long this transition takes place.
