Preparation for Oregon has made this a better defense.
Along with Sam Montgomery, Freak, Simon, Taj Jones, etc. being in the line up

Hatcher, right? Who replaced him and why wasn't that player starting last year?
Right, Brandon Taylor, starter as well, we just shuffled them around.

Montgomery and Brandon Taylor are back healthy again. Chavis had another off season to teach his defensive playbook. There is more depth along the defensive line. I would also venture to say that our defensive backs know the role of one another on every down, limiting breakdowns in coverage.

Does that seem pretty fair and accurate?
Compare LSUs TOP from last year to this year.
The way LSU sustains drives and run the football gives our D time to rest, which last year, was a huge problem. WAY too many 3 and outs from the offense was wearing out the Defense last year. Not only have they corrected it, but it's prolly one of the top in the SEC.

someone else has already made the point but ill say it again. having to play oregon first really prepared our guys physically for entire season. we look more in shape, more cut as a whole. both on offense and defense. we win in the second half. i've never seen an lsu team just break the will of opposing teams during late 3rd and early 4th quarters.

Hatcher not playing Safety. Reid Playing Safety. Taylor Playing Safety and much improved from last season. 17, 7, 24, 13 all playing at a much higher level than last year. Montgomery playing past the 5th game of the season. Mingo coming into his own. Brockers playing like a beast. Baker playing better than last year.
Enough specific info?

Okay, now that we're all agreed that having inferior players missing can lead to shitty defense...can you guys please pass along the following memo:
LSU is not the only team that gets injuries that result in subpar performances from time to time. You guys were hit with the injury bug last year, making it more difficult for you to beat Arkansas.
We suffered injuries this year that made it difficult for us to stop ANYBODY for weeks. So when you post stats about how many points/yards Arkansas' defense gives up, remember that includes games versus Bama, A&M, Auburn, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and South Carolina.
We've played exactly 4 games this year with our best players healthy (2 cupcakes at the beginning of the year, then Tennessee and MSU). The 2 cupcakes aren't worth talking about since, by definition, they aren't supposed to be able to move the ball or score (they didn't). And Tennessee and MSU are teams that struggle offensively.
My whole point in this is that no one knows what Arkansas has defensively. Not you, not arkansas fans, not les miles, not bobby petrino. You can make assumptions based on our season stats, but that doesn't tell you the true story, as we were missing a combination of the following: starting DE (2), starting DL, starting CB (2).
Once again, I'm not saying Arkansas has a great defense. Even when completely healthy I know we'll probably never have the defense of LSU/Bama (few will). But we're not nearly as porous as those stats would indicate.
Food for thought.

We didn't get hit with the injury bug bad at all. Every year you're going to have a couple injuries. Really it was just Karnell Hatcher being a major screwup.

This is huge. Last year we could go back and just about every game there were coverage breakdowns or our guys missing tackles badly. This year it's hard to point that out in any game.

Nothing was wrong with LSU's defense last year. We struggled moving the ball more against them than any other team we played.

How is it not relevant? LSU fans just posted the importance of getting back some of their key players. That's a legitimate reason why your defense has improved (One of them).
I'm simply saying that Arkansas' defense can't be judged by looking at stats, because we've had injuries this year to some of our best players on defense. I'm also not suggesting that our stats versus MSU or Tennessee are indicative because those teams suck offensively.
The point is that Arkansas' defense is neither as bad as it looked against Texas A&M or as good as it looked against MSU.

We did struggle, but I think most people would concede that them missing starters made it easier than it COULD have been.

My long post was the entire reason for my initial question.
I'm asking a legitimate question that serves 2 purposes. It allows me to learn more about your defense, but also makes you guys admit that injuries play a part in on-field success.
Is it really that hard to comprehend?

So you started a fishing thread so you could throw out your little quip?

This is some jibber-jabber.

Injuries really weren't the biggest thing, it was really mostly Karnell Hatcher, once again.

Why was he on the field? And didn't Montgomery miss most of the year?
