I think the LSU-UT SEC Championship game in 2001 started the slide. UT had already booked their tickets for the national championship game at the Rose Bowl when upstart LSU upset them.

Actually, LSU won the SEC in 1975 and that year was their first NCAA Tourney appearance.
I was a freshman at LSU in '75 and I recall the Box being just what was concrete behind the plate. No bleachers. No fans either. Maybe 200 on a good night? I remember students could go to the games for $1 with student ID and they begged people to go.
