I graduated high school in 1988. Skip came to LSU in 1984. It didn't take long for Skip to whip up baseball excitement in Louisiana.

I remember going to Skip's winter camp my junior year (87) and it seemed like every high school baseball player in the state was dreaming about playing for Skip at LSU. You had to register early because camps would book up and everyone was there trying to catch a coach's eye.

He hadn't won a NC at that point, but he was chasing one and you could just tell that the program was about to explode.

Not quite.

Football - Won a national title in 1958. Had a great run from 58-73. Had some very good teams in the 1980s. Yes, the 1990s sucked for the most part.

Baseball - Started in 1984 with the hiring of Skip Bertman, although we did win 5 SEC titles prior to his hiring.

Basketball - We had Bob Pettit before Pistol Pete. Went to the Final Four in 1953. Unofficial national title in 1935.

Skip Bertman

He is kind of like the Coach K of baseball.

As a Tenn fan, when would you say it ended for your program?

Something significant would actually have to start for it to end.

tamu fans

I noticed your football national championships (the one legit title and the two imagined) happened before 1940.

What sparked the downfall? Why hasn't tamu been good since WW2?

There wasn't a "downfall;" national titles are hard to come by--a perfect confluence of events, ya know?
We've had good periods and bad ones; but it's disingenuous to say Texas A&M hasn't been "good" since WW2.

Yours is a solid response.
I asked why Choctaw was bothered by the OP question, that's all.

I am afraid you are correct. Coach Bertman started recruiting local guys and developing talent with deeper talented coaching staffs. Coach lamabe had lots of transfers and guys from all over. Coach Bertman built a system and foundation that continues to produce.
