I'm going with a buddy of mine as well, staying at the Hotel Chester. Any recommendations near there?

The GuestRoom is a prohibition style bar just a block or so away from Chester. Expect high end pricey cocktails. Damn good.

Chester also has a pretty cool outdoor beer garden if the weather is nice.

You aren't too far (walking distance) from The Camphouse, which is a good spot.

Downtown you'll also have a new BBQ place named Moe's and a bar named Hobies. Sorry, they just opened so haven't tried either.

Dave's Darkhorse is my favorite spot in town. Dark, dingy, cheap booze, delicious food, etc. Try the "Crack Dip". It's also walking distance from Chester.

ETA: There is a shuttle that runs from downtown to the stadium on Gamedays. It picks up/drops off right by the Chester. https://fanguide.msstate.edu/transit/index.php

Mugshots Grill and Bar looks pretty cool.

It is mainly a family restaurant now. I would suggest The Guest Room (Speakeasy type of bar) right across the street from Mugshots. There is also Old Venice and they have a nice size bar area.

Old Venice is closed. There is now a place called Moe's BBQ there.

Rick's and The Hunt Club used to be the spots

If the Hunt Club is ANYTHING like the one that was in Hattiesburg (same owner), you'll need to be packing heat and wearing body armor. Shootings were happening every month and the city shut them down.

I remember going into a drug store in Starkville and I think I bought some juice. That's all I remember. It was like Richard Gere in Mothman, driving and winding up in some off the wall place.

Like how did I get here???

Screw Little Dooey. Check out the Guest Room for drinks, as well as Moe's and Bin 612 for night life. Eat at Restaurant Tyler. Also, Dave's is a great spot for food or night life if you go with a decent crowd.

Mugshots isn't a bar anymore, if you're staying at Chester the beer garden in the hotel will be good for first beers but your best bets will be Moe's, Tyler or guest room. Also Hobie's just opened up in the old State Theater. If you make it to the Cotton District there are plenty of bars to choose from. Best ones are 2 Brothers and Commodore Bob's. I'll be at the Bin, though.

ETA: Don't waste your time on Lil' Dooey, way better places to eat in Starkville.

Commodore Bob's is a good place. Hotel Chester and beer garden was featured on Gordon Ramsay's show. Darkhorse pizza is pretty damn good, it's the brick oven kind, but it's a nasty old college bar. Bin 612 is a place to go after game. R Tyler has a good menu and a speakeasy bar somewhere. Moe's will be a hot spot after the game too, with live band.

Why would you want to do anything in MS except for drive through going somewhere better. Worst state in America and stats back that up

I know, right? How could anyone even listen to music with its roots in MS, or eat food with a MS flavor? How could you find any book or movie with a MS influence even remotely entertaining?
And who drives through? Have the buncha poors never heard "flyover state"?
Gimme the statistically great places, like Arkansas, and screw MS.

HEY EVERYBODY GIVE NOTABERTFAN SOME ATTENTION!

Coming in at the end of page 2 thinking she's clever about something that's already been posted by the 5th post or not thinking arkansas ranked maybe 47th isn't really leaps and bounds higher than 50th.

If it did, it happened since baseball season. I thought Restaurant Tyler actually added a bar downstairs or something.

As others have said Moes just opened up downtown, guest room is awesome but it's a little pricy and small.

cotton district has the bin, stagger inn, two brothers, commodore bobs, bulldog burger and a few other small bars that are mostly the younger college kid crowd.

Stay the frick away from cowbells (the bar in the highlands)

The cotton district area in Starkville is starting to expand a lot. There's several new, nice apartment complexes that take up a lot of the old empty lots and has made it look much better than it used too. Starkville has made huge strides in the past 5 or so years.

Enjoy the tailgating scene it's much better than most people on the rant want to give it credit for

Avoid this at all costs unless you're black.

Cowbells is still the same as it ever was. Redneck honky tonk/dj music mixup of a dance club. They're main quality is they stay open till 3am when all other bars shut down at 1

The Hunt Club has been closed for a while now, bulldog lanes as well. I miss Greek night at the hunt club back in the day, $5 all you can drink couldn't be beat.

And restaurant Tyler is still open.
