If they're prjected as a first or second round prospect, the NCAA has a program where they can get up to $10 million in coverage and it doesn't cost them a dime until they sign a pro contract, get paid from the policy, or the note matures.
The only way it ends up bad for the athlete is if they take out a policy and then don't sign a contract.
Details here and here.

Smart move to protect the investment. The $160,000 premium will be paid off and look like chump change when he goes pro.

that's the biggest red flag.
Not even sure that was a red flag, tbh. I think it was a matter of immaturity, and he appears to have learned from it. That is what life is all about. Learning from and not repeating your mistakes.

So true. He'll get another 300 carries this year and leave college at around 800 attempts. Body is going to have some wear
He will still have less touches than guys like Peterson and Tomlinson had in college.

Seems $160,000 is a lot more than $305 to keep the lites on.
Low risk loan. Make the NFL, it gets paid off. Get injured, then the $10 mil pays it off.
Seriously, what company wouldn't take that? They are getting their money no matter what.

Except daddy Alabama
What's wrong with Bama fans today? Are IQs plummeting as they sense football season approaching?

His family took out loans to pay the 160K premium.
Can the schools only pay for it if he is already draft eligible? I know schools take these out for the player on occasion.
