Did not know he had a black daughter!

Here's a little more context:

He fricked his family's 16 year old housekeeper and knocked her up when he was 22...Ouch. Consensual? Maybe. Incredibly disturbing? Yep.

He never acknowledged her publicly. She came forward after his death. He paid for her college, so that's nice.

Brynes was FDR's right hand man and he opposed anti-lynching legislation.

Jimmy Byrnes was a segregationist who did his best to keep separate but equal a thing. And the Confederate Flag went up on the State House when Fritz Hollings was governor. These are revered political figures in SC.

It is crazy how ignorant people are of history. Looking at the Gamecock subreddit, people know nothing of the history behind the names that are on the campus buildings.

I'm willing to bet Clemson people are equally ignorant of who Clemson, Calhoun, and Tillman were outside of the views on race and slavery.

i'm willing to bet most don't care and for good reason. it doesn't matter.

Byrnes and Fritz were revered until Republican transplants moved in and flipped the state.

LOL

You think politicians "raise" money.

No, but I'm 100% sure he gave 10k. Raise the money to buy out his name. Given inflation, almost 16k. Should be simple as frick for 2 millionaires. Obviously Strom possibly secured the 35-40 million in tax payer dollars for building it, via sketchy backroom deals... but I just don't really care about him, even less now that he's been dead for a while.

How is this dangerous???

Because it never stops at just a single event; in this case renaming a building. Once it's done, they will be looking for the next thing to erase/cancel. Renaming a building fixes nothing, just like pulling down "racist" statues in New Orleans (Mitch Landrieu) fixed the black on black crime.

Stuff gets renamed all the time.

Buildings, streets, awards, bowl games (for the worse, I might add).

I do like the idea of some people putting their money where their mouth is. Donate the money and name it.

Renaming won't fix the problems, just as you said, but I don't think it is really dangerous --- I don't think it does any harm.

The current cycle seems to be outrage, then outrage at the outrage and then wash and repeat.

I know things get renamed, but on what pretense? Erasing history or canceling someone is retarded and currently at a fever pitch. The whole process we see today will not resolve the underlying causes. It starts in the household and nobody wants to address that. My position is that renaming things and canceling people and institutions based on the current racist lens is misguided, shortsighted, and dangerous. It accomplishes nothing but a further divide, which is what They (the puppet masters) want.

I like that they add this. He was one of the few anti-Civil Rights Act democrats that actually switched parties.

Not attacking you in any way, but given the Era when this occurred, do you think that housekeeper felt that she could say no, do you think this was really a consensual tryst?

Thanks to your story, old warm & charming Strom might have been a rapist to add to his "personal trophy case" that also includes Racist & Segregationist

I mean with that kind of Trifecta in his psychological makeup, I can see why so many "Southern Gentlemen" are fighting so hard to keep his name on Bldgs around campus

Not to the OP, but you guys here on the Rant are wondering why all these Athletes are suddenly speaking up and letting their opinions be heard

Some things in the Business world are deal breakers

In the USA which holds itself up as "The World's Policemen" and "The Moral Conscience of the Free World" , those views on race & slavery are gonna be deal breakers with about 75-80% of the total US Population

The good 'ole Baws oughta be happy that the "southern heritage" folks got away with their bullshite for as long as they did, like I've said before those statues & bldg names never should have gone up in the first place

Hell, you got away with your bullshite for 100+ years, shut up and be happy with that

Tillman Hall should be called Clemson Hall. There's a statue of Clemson in front of it.

There will be an outcry over this as well considering Thomas G. Clemson's past. Why not simply change it back to "Old Main" like it was before they renamed it for Tillman? From what I've seen from a lot of Clemson folks this seems to be the option they want to have happen.

This happened in Portland last night. A statue of our first President torn down and defaced by a mob. This is what happens when you accept cancel culture.

If they REALLY cared, rather than rename some dumb building from this guys name lobby to cancel the two political parties the guy gained his power in.

If SC does this then they take the SJW lead from Florida...who took it from Georgia...who took it from Mizzou. I mean come on SC, don’t cave to FORMER players.

A lot of our fans/alumni/students were calling for this long before "former players" voiced their opinions on the matter.

When we go on a fake starvation campaign and draw pics around Columbia with our shite or change our songs (we have nothing that's homophobic/racially insensitive..already checked that out thoroughly. If anything we're on the cutting edge of supporting alternate lifestyles since we cheer for Cocks) then we can talk about us taking the SJW title over.

ETA: Vegans even have to love our reverence of chickens.

How does asking for equal treatment under the law make someone a segregationist?

How does asking the Police to be fair & professional in their treatment of all Citizens that they come in contact with, Blacks included, make someone a segregationist?

You post as if you know nothing about BLM

Has anyone ever stopped to think where we would be without some of these men? We have a free country and rights because of some of these men. I haven’t kept up with it but do you know if UVA has removed Jefferson from anything?
