Strom Thurmond was born less than 80 years after Jefferson's death and lived most of his life in a time and place where segregation was the law and custom. He was no Ben Tillman, Cole Blease or Cotton Ed Smith.
So you don't mind if those statues get torn down then?

The last two don't have any statues to my knowledge, but I have never lived in Newberry or Lee Counties, where each was from. The main building at Clemson is named for Ben Tillman and I believe it should remain, because the college's charter passed the General Assembly by 1 vote and only because of Tillman and his allies. A year later, Tillman became governor and became the main proponent of funding the new college. Clemson would not exist today without Ben Tillman. His contributions to the school deserve to be recognized, in spite of the fact that he was a horrible human being otherwise.

The meaning of the word racist has been lost completely because low IQ types such as yourself use it when you’re presented with facts you disagree with.
You’re a clown. No one takes you seriously, you know that right?

Those contributions were recognized in his lifetime. He did nothing to deserve eternity.

And Ben Tillman's statue at the South Carolina Statehouse?

I love how we just want to wipe out history like it never happened.

You prove his point with every post

Thought I had heard that. Thanks for confirming. Strom did an awful lot for the people of South Carolina and education in this state. Though he had some faults the good he did for the state as a whole should not be overshadowed. At one time we have all made mistakes and should not be judged for our past when we change. It’s not like he committed murder. He wasn’t like Tillman. He did more to help ALL people in South Carolina than he did hurt if you look at the mans entire life. Leave the building alone. Racial relations change with peoples heart not brick and mortar

Keep it up. He is one of the most important figures in SC history. Without him, Clemson and Winthrop don't exist. His feud with the Hampton faction in post-Reconstruction SC still is relevant today both politically and culturally. It's actually the basis for the USC-Clemson rivalry and one of the reasons it's one of the fiercest in the country. And I say all this as someone who hates Clemson the way y'all hate Auburn or Tennessee.

Keep what up, exactly?
You just went from saying Tillman was a horrible person to defending a statue honoring him right on the steps of your capitol. So, which is he - horrible, or to be honored?

It's not that it didn't happen. It's that it's not worthy of either elevation or celebration. You can still find the names of all of them in history books - where they belong. Save the statues and naming rights for people who deserve it.

Everyone keeps mentioning this "Hitler" fellow, but without any statues of him who can truly say who he is.
We all forgot that Saddam guy the moment his last statue fell.

Keep the statue up is what I meant. Yes Tillman was a horrible person, but he deserves recognition for the impact he had and continues to have on this state. Andrew Jackson was worse than Tillman imo, but he's on our currency despite the Trail of Tears and himself killing multiple people outside of war.

Tillman was a horrible human but your history is correct.I think everyone needs to understand and question had some of these people been alive today would they have thought the same way as they did when they were alive? Times change. People change. I’m certainly not the same man at 58 as I was at 38. While I cannot condone the actions of him his work gave the state an alternative for higher education. I get this is not popular but at the end of the day I think there are two major universities in a small state and each serves the citizens of our state very well. I talk to high school kids daily and ask them what they want to do. They tell me business I’m honest Carolina is a great choice for public education. Engineer I tell them Clemson is a fine choice. I am very proud of both institutions of higher education and feel that both play an important role to the people and businesses in the state.

Two of my three children graduated from Strom Thurmond High School. The third will do so next spring.
The movement is on to change the name of the school.

lol this makes no sense
nobody knows what Tillman and Hampton feuded about or that there was a feud.
SC grads / fans who have been talking about Tillman at Clemson for years have no idea who Wade Hampton is despite a dorm named after him on SC's campus. lol
who is this Wade hampton you speak of, Tillman. i thought there was only one racist in SC in the 1800s.

You in Edgefield County? Love that area of the state.

I'm surprised Byrnes High school in Spartanburg has not changed its name yet.
Brynes was FDR's right hand man and he opposed anti-lynching legislation.

I think it is probable Tillman's support for a new agricultural college at Clemson is the reason why it only passed by 1 vote in a state that was largely agricultural at the time. A lot of people hated him. the idea he was needed for the university to exist is a stretch.
It would have been silly for the state to turn down free land for a university by Thomas Clemson, an agricultural scientist, basically the first USDA superintendent, who helped found another land grant university, the University of Maryland.
Tillman Hall should be called Clemson Hall. There's a statue of Clemson in front of it.

Yes. There’s a statue of Strom in the town square. I’m hearing rumblings that it needs to come down.
