You watch what I say. Firing a head coach with a 75% winning percentage to hire a guy who has never been a head coach in his life is a recipe for disaster. Georgia will fall back to 7-5/8-4 next year at best.

It's a pretty big risk indeed

But after the bama and Florida games they had to do something

Jimbo Fisher has done a pretty good job following Bobby Bowden at FSU. Bowden was forced out.

Say what you will, but most coaches will not have a record as good as Mark Richt.

I understand why GA pulled the trigger. But Richt is still a proven and good coach.

Smart is riskier than Richt, I think the calculation is that his upside will be higher. That being said, most schools would probably keep a guy like Richt until he retired.

Kirby has always done things the right way. He has paid his dues, not taking any shortcuts, and the players respect him.He has a solid base of experience to build on, and passed up several previous head coaching opportunities. I think Georgia could have done a lot worse.

While I have been very critical of Richt, I too think it strange that you fire someone who has won 75% of his games as a head coach since 2001, and replace him with a total unknown.

I love Kirby. The man has been a great assistant for us over the last 9 seasons, but there is no guarantee he can do any better than Richt. If I had been the Georgia administration, I would have been searching for a known commodity.

I think he'll be a good one just so long as people keep their expectations in check. He won't be the next Saban. If it were that easy to replicate what Saban does, there would be dozens of coaches snapping at his heels. But he's solid and no doubt knows how to run a program after all those years working under Saban.

Or he could crash and burn. Who knows? But UGA felt like it was an acceptable risk, so more power to them.

He would have been a great hire for like a Vandy or Mizzou but to take over the reigns of a team who fired their coach after a 10 win season? Uga is being set up for huge disappointment.

I see good things ahead for UGA. I also see Richt giving Miami some pulse just because it will babe typical, but I think UGA will see some success under Smart. Spent the weekend in Athens for NYE. I highly recommend Trappeze. Sweet potato fries holy shite.

my $ is on Richt having Miami in the playoffs before Smart has Uga in the hunt. Uga fans sound just like Florida fans about the time they hired boom.

you will have a pretty good clue in 4 or 5 years when Smart is either HC at a much smaller school or back at DC somewhere.
