We used to pick up 840 WHAS clear as a bell in Shreveport. I remember following the Cats back in 1970 when Adolph Rupp was still coaching and the stars on the team were Dan Issel and Ryan Dinwiddie.

I loved all things Kentucky at the time, including the Elvis song, Kentucky Rain.

Yep...as I did in Tuscaloosa even back to the late 50s. Cawood Ledford, the voice of Kentucky basketball, sounded like God calling a basketball game. Also, when Kentucky would come to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama, the place was standing room only, but you'd look around and there would be literally a couple of thousand blue-clad Wildcat fans there (usually in some of the best seats ). I really enjoyed talking basketball with those folks...they were, by far, the most knowledgeable fans I've ever encountered. Anyway, you can love or hate them, but you're a complete idiot if you don't respect them and their program.

840 and 700 out of Cincinatti are two that come to mind.

There is another station across the Ohio in Covington, WCKY--or at least that's what it used to be. 1530am that is a UK station. It can be heard down in Alabama, too.

For years Vanderbilt games were on WSM 650 (this is where Larry Munson got his start). This was great for Monday or Wednesday night games, but on Saturday nights (and Friday nights)they would --and still do -- carry the Grand Ol' Opry.If you were patient enough you could faintly here it on Saturday afternoons.Vandy then switched to WLAC 1510,another clear channel, but the Vol Network got it in the 90's.

What was interesting about listening to John Ward and the Vols in the 1970s and 1980s was whereas UT didn't have a 'clear channel' as one of its stations, their flagship station was WNOX 990 in Knoxville and their Nashville station was WSIX 980 so if you so desired you could wrestle between those two ajoining stations and usually hear everything.
