was out of town Saturday and drove back home listening to pre-game and game itself on WHAS 840 out of Louisville.
You can tell basketball is their baby and they do a tremendous job with it.Dave Baker in the studio is superb and Tom Leach may be the most underrated pbp guy in the country. Mike Pratt is an above average color analyst.
Very thorough with their scouting of Florida as well as commentary on UK. They mentioned before the game about UK injuries and illnesses but sort of paused and basically said, but this is big boy basketball. They'll have to deal with it.

Yeah they do a very good job. Tom Leach does both basketball and football and is equally impressive in both.

Like them or not everything about UK basketball is first class.

They are just working to the standard of the GOAT, Caywood Ledford. He held UK BB fans to a highest standard. He did not cut the Cats any slack when playing poorly or doing anything bush league. He was very good with the PBP, rarely missed anything, and did not sugar cote it.
From his obit:
"Although the Wildcats' broadcasters are employed by the university, Ledford tended to call games as he saw them. The renowned Kentucky Coach Adolph Rupp once told him, ''By God, Cawood, when you see one of our teams dogging it, by God, burn 'em.''"

I don't really care for Baker or Leach. Leach isn't as good as he thinks he is. I do like Mike Pratt.

We're spoiled because Leach is just as good with Jeff Piecoro during the football season. Only miss they've had in years is hiring Rex Chapman for the pregame show because he is beyond awful.

Couldn't agree less about Leach. He's one of the best in the business.
Drive around and listen to some of these teams' broadcasts and you'll have a greater appreciation for the guy.

Hell, you don't have to be their fan, just show the respect that a knowledgeable fan of the sport would have for excellence within the sport. I used to despise the Yankees in the 50s and 60s (still do), but I could damn sure appreciate their greatness.

I was in Gatlinburg during the UK/UT football game so I listened to part of the game on the radio and it was laughable how bad the UT guys were. Sounded like a high school game.

Sports aside, this 50kw clear channel station has a very long history in that entire region, always very high quality and highly rated. It makes WWL sound like amateur hour.

Because of jealousy and bitterness that go beyond appreciation of genuine success

WHAS 840 is a FOX station. That ought to turn the few doubters of its greatness.

The Sec has been blessed over the years with some very good announcers and many who lived for their programs until they just couldn't do it anymore.
Larry Munson for Georgia, Jim Hawthorne at LSU, Jack Cristil at MSU etc and I know our long time baseball announcer Jim Ellis will be hanging up the gloves before too long.
Every announcer has been very unique and it's sad when they retire. I've listened to every school announcers call games for most big 3 sports and most of them were pretty darn good. The ones I listed above were my favorites.

We used to pick up 840 WHAS clear as a bell in Shreveport. I remember following the Cats back in 1970 when Adolph Rupp was still coaching and the stars on the team were Dan Issel and Ryan Dinwiddie.
I loved all things Kentucky at the time, including the Elvis song, Kentucky Rain.

The history of some of the old mega radio stations is fascinating to me. Likely because it was before my time and I'm always interested in things that bind large swaths of the country. 840 and 700 out of Cincinatti are two that come to mind. I always love hearing stories about how they affected people/culture/etc.

I remember sitting in my Mom's car in the Dollar General parking lot in Jacksonville, AL, listening to Gary Burbank's "Earl Pitts" on WLW one evening after school.
It blew my mind that a radio station could be heard nearly 500 miles away during the daytime.
