Just how ordinary were the 1998 Tennessee Volunteers?

If it weren't for the 12-2 LSU Tigers, I think the '98 Vols would be among the candidates for weakest national champion in SEC history. They had almost zero flash, they hardly ever wowed you, and even ended up facing one of the most impotent FSU teams of the 1990s in the national championship game.

It's very possible the Volunteers lose to Florida State if Weinke actually starts the game. Instead Tennessee had the good fortune of going up against the third string QB. And still they had a chance of blowing it at the end.

LSU was the only two loss champion of the bowl alliance/bowl coalition/BCS era. What else would you call 2007 LSU?

Weak national championship > strong national championship finalist

Also, just because Manning was gone doesn't mean they didn't have flash.

Weakest national champion? Good candidates are 1984 BYU, 1960 Minnesota, 1990 Georgia Tech

Yet 'Bama and LSU fans alike praise the 6-3 game as a technical masterpiece, worthy of the hype.

Only 28 players drafted off the roster and 42 players who appeared in at least 1 regular season NFL game. Very pedestrian.

Lost twice in triple overtime. They would be 12-0-2 prior to bcs era. Better than a few of the championships Alabama claims.

Ragging on the "worst teams to win the NC" is like ragging a guy for banging the ugliest 10

98 Tennessee was similar to 2010 or 2013 Auburn. Tons of close games and lots of fortunate bounces. But you're right, that 07 LSU team is the worst team to win a national title since the advent of the BCS.

Couldn't quite handle the mighty Andre Woodson led Kentucky Wildcats in Commonwealth, but they beat an undefeated NC team with 30+ pros by 2 TDs easy!!

Tennessee isn't close to 2013 Auburn in terms of luck. They played 5 games that were decided by one score, and three of those teams went on to play in a BCS bowl game. Other than Stoerner's fumble, Tennessee wasn't really lucky to win any of those games.

Well, don't forget they went unbeaten in regulation. Only 11 of the other 15 BCS champions can say that.

2010 Auburn is the weakest national champion in SEC history. They survived and escaped so many games. Any other SEC national champion since 1998 beats them by 14+

As opposed to 1965 Alabama that was 9-1-1. Three teams ahead lost their bowl games to split the title (including LSU beating 10-0 Arkansas)

14-0 while the SEC West was the strongest it has ever been. Yea, weak sauce.

Damn, I guess they should've just lost instead of winning.

I would love for you to go into detail as to why. Let's hear it.
