Joshua Dobbs and why he will dominate the SEC next year.
The Alabama game shows a young qb who can make any throw and is really accurate, Tenn's wideouts dropped a number of passes

Much has been said about Dobbs and how this is the year he takes off, that's all talk what does the tape tell us?
Joshua Dobbs is smart with the football.

Here Tenn has 2 wideouts with alabama playing two safeties. Alex Wills plays the H-Back here, he runs a wheel route which confuses the safety who thinks he's blocking for the receiver coming in motion. This looked like an easy 25 yard gain which is more complicated than it looks.

2 His athleticism.
Watching Dobbs run against Alabama, I realized how much faster he looked, he broke away for some pretty big gains.
This a designed qb draw, he breaks a tackle from Trey Depriest and he is off, out running 5-6 Bama players.

Dobbs is just not athletic when running the ball, he does a good job of keeping his eyes open when scrambling and has that Manziel shake and bake to his game.

3 Accuracy
His mid accuracy is far superior to his short accuracy this is something similar to Dak Prescott, but Dobbs throws a prettier ball. He tends to be erratic at times but when he's on the money it can be pretty.
On this red zone play Dobbs sees Bama bringing the pressure and he recognizes single coverage at the top with no safety help, he throws a beautiful back shoulder fade to Malone in a spot only the receiver could catch, this seems like an easy throw but it is easily one of the toughest throws to make in football.

Next throw is him throwing it on a rope.
Alabama had single man coverage with the inside linebacker covering the tight end, Wolf made the catch on the safety simple but impressive slant throw.

Breaking down more film, arguably having his best game aginst Kentucky he also showed great pocket poise and accuracy.
What Dobbs sees pre play is the more outside linebacker crashing in if its a run play.

or attempting to cover if hurd swings out, he notices the mis match of the inside linebacker with the tight end as the safety will swing out to give help to the outside receivers, this leaves the tight end with one on one coverage with the linebacker, he delivers a pretty strike.

Throws like this are some Dual Threats struggle with at times, Dobbs is different he's the new breed of dual threat's that will beat you with their arm, brain and legs.
Here's another throw to like another simple slant that hits his man while moving, qb's that struggle with throws like this is Prescott for example who instead of throwing to his Wide out's throws to his wide outs.

Some of the examples I've used has Dobbs throwing from the play action, that's where he does the most damage, Tennessee tight ends are a big part of this and Dobbs recognizes this and uses this well

It's also easy to fall in love with the deep ball Dobbs throws, he throws a perfect spiral that when accurate is easy for the wideouts to catch.

On this next play its a designed jet motion for the receiver, H-Back Alex Ellis crossed to formation to simulate a slice block. This action tells the defense that Hurd is getting the ball on split zone. Instead, Dobbs faked the handoff and dropped to throw. Pearson ran a rail route up the sideline while flanker Josh Malone ran a deep post.At the snap, we can immediately see that this is man coverage. South Carolina’s nickelback is trailing Pearson across the field in man coverage.
Every time the Vols called playaction with jet motion last season, the receiver that came in motion just ran to flat as a checkdown. For the first time last season, Pearson ran up the sideline on a deep route rather than going to the flat after the motion. The Gamecocks’ defender was not expecting this. He took a sharp angle to the flat, believing that Pearson was just running a short route.
Instead, Pearson ran up the sideline and used his speed to take advantage of the defender’s poor angle and get wide open. Dobbs hit Pearson for a huge 42 yard gain.

Dobbs is far from perfect and he's glaring weakness is he overthrows his receivers, tends to stare at them, is erratic with passes and throws into deep double coverages.
At times he is hesitant to run with the ball, a play like this shows some open space and even an open man but he opts for the receiver who is double covered and the throw is not even close.

Next is an easy wide open throw he misses.

From what I've seen he is young and smart, he smells blood and knows how to attack, his weapons dropped a number of passes but this is an impressive qb with tons of upside.

Upvote from me. Like to have that on each QB in the SEC. What's Tenn o-line looking like this year? Dobb's should be much improved this year with good o-line play.

Not really sure the Alabama game is a good game to go on. It was a QB change and Alabama had game planned for a different QB.

Texas fans made this mistake with Gilbert after the 2009 season because it seemed like he had a few moments of greatness. Of course, once teams prepared for that guy, it was a completely different story, and he ended up transferring away.

Once a player has some film on him and the other teams game plan for them, they have to start dealing with their weaknesses more.

Edit: But for the record, I do appreciate the post content/attempt.

Yeah I remember that excuse post-game even though everyone knew Dobbs was playing that game and it was announced by our coach.

Despite his spooky forehead I think Dobbs looks like the real deal going into this season. If he gets time to throw he's going to carve up some teams.

He has the ability. So much will depend on the oline being ok. But Dobbs was able to keep the D in check and help our oline tons simply by the fact that he's so dangerous as a runner. He's one of those guys where flushing him from the pocket may not be the best idea if you want to avoid a big play.

As our oline coach said after Dobbs was inserted about the oline's sudden improvement, "he makes us a right even when we're wrong."

The ability to take off and run is a huge weapon for a QB. Arkansas, for example, won a quite a few games with Matt Jones because teams were, quite rightly, worried about his ability to pick up yards on the ground.

IDK. He's always looked pretty pedestrian against us.

See my avi? That's from the first time y'all faced him. He didn't start that game either. See who he's burning? Just one of your GOATs and one of the same guys he burnt again this past year.

But if you truly believe the GOAT Defensive Minded Coach and GOAT Active HC didn't prepare for Dobbs and honestly thought Nate Peterman would play most of that game I don't know what to tell you.

He was a true freshmen in his first start his first year and was yet again inserted at the end of the season with zero playing with a shitty oline who'd just lost it's center and a team that had lost it's star defender the week of that game. I can't imagine why the worst OL in CFB struggled against one of the best DL's.

Think he's obviously a gifted athlete and bright kid but he throws a lot of 50/50s and a lot of ducks.
