Big first years at job (champion and runner up), overall mediocre records (Johnson 58% NBA Win, Gruden 54% NFL Win), post-coaching well known ESPN celebs, engaging personalities, little experience in college game. A sliding scale due to the Tennessee football job being better than the Alabama basketball job and Gruden v Johnson being a similar difference with Gruden being better than Avery.

True or false?

1. I doubt Tennessee actually gets Gruden
2. Johnson never won an NBA Championship
3. As far as I know, Johnson hasn't been sought after as a head coach since being fired.

I was rolled up by the subject line alone.

This is worse than the first time I saw childbirth.

1. Grumors are a hobby not anything fans believe in.

BUT for the sake of argument...

2. People know who Gruden is and he has a winning record. Avery was one of many schmuck's who played pro shooty hoops. Comparing the two is beyond silly.

3. Gruden's fame = instant hype and success on the crootin' trail. I know even the best of Gumps (looking at you George) think the world revolves around Alibubba but it really doesn't (well, save for the Saban era foosball program you got going but no one blinked except to say 'good hire' in a perfunctory - we feel like we're supposed to way - when Avery was hired.
-------3a. Crootin matters a ton in CFB
-------3b. In a world where comittees rule hype matters too.

4. As Saban is wont to say, it's the Jimmys and Joes. Gruden brings that.

5. Along similar lines he'd bring good assistants with him and has a rolodex that rivals anyone in the biz. THAT matters - A. LOT.
------5a. The hire and budget for assistants would show we'er finally serious about winning.

So there... why your premise is wrong even tho no one, including myself expects to hire him. Hell, I'm not sure he's the best candidate, tbh. ??

tl;dr - Gruden doesn't = Avery AT ALL even tho no one expects to hire Gruden IRL

If Gruden signs a top 5 class and has VOLS in top 4 of the SEC by year 3 then wow

Avery's NBA winning percentage was better than Grudens NFL one. Woah.

Instant credibility and immediately taking recruiting up a notch? Sounds like Gruden will take the Avery Johnson approach to building his program.

Wow, the tea leaves on this one

I hope the vols get gruden. They'll still suck but at least have something to get excited about for awhile, sort of like stidham.

I haven't read the rest of the thread, but I hope you've already been called out on this.

Avery Johnson was a GREAT pro basketball player. One of my all time favorite point guards.

False. More like Pete Carroll, if Pete Carroll had actually won anything in the NFL.

No one knows who Avery is. Shooty hoops ain't foosball. And Avery doesn't have a Super Bowl. /thread.

I doubt that any 11th grade high school football player ever saw Jon Gruden coach a game or knows his pro coaching record, maybe even don't know he was ever a coach.
