Saban repeated the sentiment earlier this week when he said he feared going into the playoff that “all the attention, all the interest would be about the four teams in the playoffs” and “that by having a playoff we would minimize the interest in other bowl games, which I think is sort of what happened and I hate to see that for college football."

Beef O Brady's bowl ratings in 2011: 1.57
In 2013: 1.33
Same bowl first year of CFP: 2.0

No one cared about these bowls before, and no one cares about them now. If the CFP gets rid of them, so much the better.

This is solid criticism. But to be fair, there is also a very large number of fans, generally those of the Tiger persuasion (either the Bengal or Plains variety), who immediately think "Saban made a comment, must slam so quickly that I don't have time to consider its merit."

No, he's not wrong. The fans all but demanded a playoff-type system and they gave it to us. The "other" Bowls haven't been rendered unwatchable, unless you're an LSU fan.

Like I said, Saban had the same issues with the BCS system.

Incorrect. The casual fans had a minor influence, the network talking heads caused this.

Sorry, Nick. I didn't know who I was talking to here. Now you Gumps even define what a "true fan" is?

Goddamn you're pathetically arrogant.

I agree, the Texas Bowl is great for bottom-feeder programs like rKansas that have a losing record (14-23) and have not won a conference title in a quarter century or a NC in a half-century.

Saban needs to coach and stfu about the business aspect of things. He doesn't know shite and has failed miserably in several "businesses" he has interest in. The ones that are working are the ones he has no say in the daily operations of.

Great coach, but a dumb arse in all other areas. Little man syndrome takes over.

The TV pays for the bowl to each school, no matter how many fans are "intersted". Those payouts help struggling programs survive.

He's so fricking stupid it makes my head hurt. Of course the attention is on the national championship playoffs! Guess what Saban, the attention is also heavier on the World Series, Super bowl, Stanley cup, Final Four, etc etc etc

fricking coach and shut your midget arse up!

The only people that I have ever heard in favor of a playoff couldn't discern a linebacker from a wide receiver. So, how would define your narrow-minded opinion? Relative to mine that is.

I don't think it's 'wrong' per say as much as it is comical. To pretend bowl games are 'for the kids' is an asinine statement considering it's widely known to be about money.

FWIW he is a coach, so I see where he takes the stance on it being about the players. But that sort of proves Long right in that Saban is out of touch, even though that wasn't the angle he was taking.

Either do away with the bowls and have just a playoff, or do away with the playoff and leave the bowl system intact.

I agree with this. An 8 team playoff would be nice. Lower tier bowl games are just participation ribbons.

Kids that did not get invites that they thought they earned would disagree. Morning cas!

I just don't think you 'earned' anything by making some rinky dink bowl game because you went 8-5. Mornin' buddy.

You know why Jeff Long is the chairman of the CFB playoff committee?

Because no one ever suspects that there would ever be a conflict of interest for him. IYKWIM.

Agree, but I sure was happy my team got an invite one year with only 7 wins. Played USC I believe.
