But he also hired Rick Ray.

Every great AD makes hires that don't pan out sometimes, so I don't see the big deal.

Congrats on the hire. I'd be furious if I were a Bama fan, unless Bama has a huge surprise hire in store

Good job State. You deserve it after the misery of the last few seasons.

Should have just kept Stansbury. Howland without the UCLA brand name is going to struggle in my estimation. Also the SI pieces buried him for good reason.

Why is this a bad hire but Pearl was a homerun (or maybe you disliked Pearl too)?

Are we gonna have more than 2 or 3 teams that are good in basketball? That would be awesome. The SEC is very top heavy in basketball.

I think Pearl is a much better tactician. I think Pearl's resume is much more impressive. Pearl lost his job because of a show cause that most think was too heavy handed. Howland lost his because he's an enormous A-hole who stopped winning big at UCLA of all places.

I didn't think Pearl was a home run, but liked that move more than this one. To clarify, I didn't think Pearl was bad either. Thought it was solid.

That's a program changing hire.

Huge news for State and tSEC.

Cal
Donovan
Pearl
Howland

4 very good coaches in conference should help dramatically with the perception we have as a league

Congrats on the hire, MSU! I think he's a program changer like AU's hire of Pearl. Good times coming to SEC BB!

Great hire. No doubt. Does it come with some risk? Sure. But don't they all these days unless you hire a D2 coach with high integrity. Of course, then you only win 8 games.

Seriously though, great potential with this hire. I have to say. I really like a lot of the coaches in the SEC and when Bama offers Greg Marshall $7 million a year, the coaching depth will only get better.

fricking up and hiring Rick Ray is pretty bad strike against him. they downgraded big time in coaching when they fired stans and hired rick ray. It was the right call to fire stans but they conducted a horrible coach and hired a 3rd rate assistant.

I heard that it will be $3.5M per year with a new arena by 2020.

A down conference as evidenced by the fact that the Gophers housed them by 20 in the round of 32.

Witchita State is an easier place to win than Bama. They also have fan support. There is no way Gregg Marshall would leave for any SEC team outside of UK and Florida.
